[Kaye] Panthers hire Darrell Bevell as assistant HC

  1. Nice. Canales isn’t even an awful OC but he will be best managing the game and letting someone else script the plays.

  2. Offensive specialist is a new position right? Or did we have someone in that role last season?

Either way I like this move. Another voice/set of eyes on offense and someone Dave has worked under before and respects sounds like a no brainer

  3. We need a true play calling OC so Canales can be the coach. Enough of this “my buddy is the OC stuff.

  4. This tells me Canales is recognizing his shortcomings and is addressing those. This will allow him to be a better HC I think.

  5. I think he’s manly here to help Canales add some new concepts and dimensions to the team offense.

I’d be very wary of giving him play calling duties tho. Bevell hasn’t been very good as OC in the NFL for a bit now. Much rather stick with Canales.

  6. Getting some of that McDaniel Miami scheme going on our offense would be tremendous

Per this analysis from Sharp Football, Miami had highest rates of motion and play action last year. Panthers were bottom to below average in both

Been wondering for the last two years why we don’t do more of this. The play action/RPO stuff is where Bryce really thrived at Bama

  7. Seems like he jumped Idzik on OC and would be helping with calling the majority of the Offensive plays?

  8. Bevell was a sought-after OC candidate and was getting a lot of interviews. Hiring Bevell as an **associate** HC (not *assistant* OP!) most likely means Tepper was willing to bust out the checkbook and outbid other teams who were interested in him. Associate HCs are typically senior level coaches who get paid a lot more than a typical assistant coach. Canales is going to continue calling plays, though Bevell could help him develop into a better playcaller.

The big reason to bring him in, as Kaye mentions, is to help improve the run game. The Seahawks were an elite rushing offense when he was the OC, and he just spent the past 4 years working with one of the best offensive minds in the NFL for rushing concepts in McDaniel. Despite the handful of games where Dowdle looked nearly unstoppable early in the season, the Panthers’ run game fell off a cliff down the stretch.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some pretty significant changes in the 2026 offense. Maybe the team will actually roster a fullback again. Hopefully he can help the WRs and TEs get better at run blocking. This could quietly be a transformational hire that helps catapult the offense into a top-10 unit.

  9. I remember he was one of the guys I was hoping we’d bring in to work with Bryce so I like the hire.

  10. Who was I arguing with about whether Canales was a McVay or Bevell guy?

Biggest thing here is that Bevell has undergone a lot of offensive transition since his time in Seattle so hopefully he brings that same energy and focuses them to grow and adapt.

  11. Lot of great offensive collaboration in that coaches room. I wonder what this means for Jim Caldwell
