I mean, it is egregious, but it's the league that is incentivizing losing. So many other teams have done it, the reason the Jazz are doing it this way is because they have to follow the rules the league put in place with needing to have active players.
Dave, I think NBA TV ratings are better because they started bringing far more games to view for the masses by putting them back on the main channels, NBC, those guys and not hiding so many games on pay for view networks. When you make the games more readily available you will get more interest. Thats a no brainer. I can believe the ratings are up. I have seen more other NBA games because of availability than I've watched for years. Largely because they are more available. I won't go pay extra money to watch games when I have time because I usually don't have that much spare time to watch a bunch of games. But the NBA will continue to lose viewers until they figure out what rules they are going to keep and enforce and not see so much debate over rules between all parties. It's a mess. Rules are getting too complex and interpretation to wide.
NBA (ESPN) is using the Jazz as a Red Herring to divert attention from the LA Clippers cheating scandal.
Th underlying issue is that the NBA is a cartel run by and for the owners of the franchises. Until that changes the problems with tanking will persist because firstly there is no jeopardy through the prospect of relegation and secondly failure is rewarded by the draft system. But of course the league won’t expand because the current owners are raking it in
nobody said shit about lebronda sitting out during the regular season, resting for the playoffs either – spare me. Utah vs. The World.
Jazz unethically tanking. It's OK to suck. It's not OK to have a good team but simply bench your guys when you're winning. That's why everyone are calling out the jazz.
Small market teams don’t always get the respect they deserve. There are double standards in the NBA.
The Jazz are tanking. There's no secret about that. That does "mess with the integrity of the NBA". But, if there aren't any rules against it, you use it to your advantage. Many other teams do the same thing. I don't know how else a team like the Jazz can compete without tanking about building a winning team through the draft. Free agents don't want to play in Utah. They lose anyone they have that's good due to free agency. There's no other option. The NBA needs to change some rules in order to make more fair and equal competition in the league.
I am amazed at the outrage towards the Jazz for tanking. I wonder if the Jazz should just sit their stars for the rest of the season like the Wizards are doing.
I think one of the solutions to the NBA, would be to go back to having divisions within each conference, with the winner of each division, going to the playoff. Then you have a few wildcard teams as well, NFL style. It would bring competition and rivalries back to the forefront
NBA should consult with some world class game designers about this stuff. These are the types of questions that I (as an average game designer) have to work through every day on my job. Pelton idea is ok, but still has some incentives issues and only approaches the issue from an anti-tanking standpoint, and not helping truly bad teams get better players.
An easy and fair solution to teams tanking is to go to a rotation for draft picks instead of a lottery with odds based off of your record. Every team would get the #1 pick once every 30 years. That's better than the Jazz have done over the last 30 years.
Spurs are as guilty as any franchise. And I’d bet money that the league are helping them do it.
Well let’s face it everyone hates on Utah in general they have never wanted to see the jazz come up let the haters hate go jazz
Bobby Marks doesn't know his ass from his elbow.
Have the last 20 games where head to head record to other playoff teams are given a lottery ball. Third of the chances come from this and could be additive to the finishing records…It would give incentive for matches with losing teams to still compete.
Singling out the Jazz on national tv should be grounds for legal action by Ryan Smith!
Any solution still needs to provide an avenue for bad teams to get better. So you can’t assign draft order based on winning, otherwise good teams will just keep getting better.
Best solution IMO is to just lock the draft order Feb 1st. Get the tank out of the way early on during football season, so when the Super Bowl is done and it’s NBA’s time to shine, it’s in everyone’s best interest to compete. This way, bad teams can lock in that lottery pick an then spend the 2nd half competing for the last play in spot. 💯
I would also give the same lottery odds to teams 1-8. It makes it less cut throat trying to crack the bottom 4.
I'm all in on pissed off David Locke
I agree 100%. What’s the real reason they want to pile onto the Jazz. I am totally annoyed at these writers using the Jazz to criticize a broken system.
I always complained when in a certain seasons when there wa sno playoff hopes, sloan and ty corbin would play veterans over the young ones. always screaming give the youngsters more mintues this season is lost. now it is finally done giving the yooungsters valuable minutes and the media complains! this sint only about thinking. is investing into the youngsters giving them valauble minutes, if teams can invest for futre aka multi year contracts nobody should complain what coaches do with minutes when there is no hope for playoff run
So, your whole argument is that everyone does it, so its ok. The Jazz shouldn't be singled out, even though they've been fined for doing it, they've lied to the fanbase telling us they weren't going to do it, and they've found a way to do it in such an obvious fashion after a blockbuster trade that it's making everyone notice. I'm going to say that if you aren't a part of the solution, you're part of the problem, and the Jazz are the poster boys for the problem. Pretending they are being singled out for some personal bias is weak and lame. Grasp more straws. I think there's no place in professional sports for deliberately losing, especially at the prices we as fans pay for tickets or tv subscriptions. Your outrage is misplaced, get pissed at the NBA for continuing to bungle the issue.
I guess as long as we just sit the guys with random injuries instead of sitting them in the 4th quarter…that way the nba can keep its integrity 😂…
A couple fixes get rid of protections on traded picks, had we already had to give up the 1st we wouldnt be playing to keep it in the top 8 this year…get rid of lottery odds all teams in the lottery have the same odds 1 ping pong ball per team and go 1 through 13 in the lottery…no reward to being the worst 4 teams to get better odds.
F Marks
Why don’t the teams that don’t make playoffs all just have equal odds to get the number 1 pick
Worst case scenario a team who is on the fringe of the playoffs gets a number 1 pick
And if teams rather miss the playoffs for a 7.1 percent chance for the number 1 pick then that’s on them..
I really would like to hear a rebuttal for this, because I haven’t been able to come up with one. Go ahead tell me I’m stupid
In today’s game, any team that knows in their heart they can’t get past the first round in today’s salary structure should tank. I believe that’s why the Lakers didn’t play anyone last night. A great deal can be accomplished in tank mode (player development etc). F Marks.
I mean we came out winning games, threatening to lose our pick! Unbelievable.
Amen
Change the rules… Ridiculous to expect a team to hurt their franchise out of the goodness of theor heart and in the name of "integrity of the game."
I have no idea how people do not realize THAT THE JAZZ WON THE GAME
Thank you David 100 percent right on the money
