Edit: I condensed the video down to just our team. I didn’t care about the others teams who made the list. 🤷♂️
==================
The Washington Commanders employed a “running back by committee” on offense in 2025, utilizing a minimum of four different running backs.
Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols, Chris Rodriguez Jr., and Jacory Croskey-Merritt all carried the ball at one point.
Ekeler went down early in the season with an Achilles injury, which opened the door for the other three backs to prove themselves.
McNichols, Rodriguez, and Wild Bill all proved themselves in various games throughout the season, and despite a lackluster offense in 2025, the ground game remained solid.
We often heard Bill’s name as he flashed as a sixth-round draft pick rookie and drew attention, and Rodriguez was a close second in yards to Croskey-Merritt, but McNichols was quietly the glue that held them together.
McNichols had just one touchdown in all of 2025, and the run was so good that the NFL deemed it the second-best run in the whole season.
It was Week 3 of the season, and the Commanders had just lost Ekeler and Jayden Daniels in Week 2.
Desperate to rebound with a win, it was the second quarter and the Las Vegas Raiders had just tied the game at 10. With under four minutes to play in the half, Marcus Mariota handed the ball off to McNichols.
The veteran running back ran into a group of players, and it looked like he might not get anywhere.
But his legs never stopped moving, and once he broke through the pack, he was gone for a 60-yard touchdown.
That was McNichols only touchdown in 2025, and while he didn’t have the same yardage as Bill or Rodriguez, McNichols is a key part of this offense, always managing to pull something off at just the right time.
An impending free agent in 2026, the Commanders will have to decide if he’s a player they want to keep or let test the free agency market come March.
