No they don't, this year will be a good test for the scouting department and the front office to see how they draft without having a top 3 or 5 pick like they've had the last three drafts.
I mean it sounds like they can move back with that oilers pick if they need more picks
How many times do you get a top 5 point producer for under $1 mil against the cap? Maybe retain some picks this year fine but next year fuck them picks let’s go for it before Celebrini gets the brinks truck he deserves
If they can get lucky or high enough in the lottery to draft LD Alberts Smits he'd be perfect on the blueline. Celebrini – Misa down the middle with Dickinson and Smits on the top two defense pairs moving forward would be a problem.
With Celebrini's play/development I see sharks going big game hunting in free agency in the next 2-3 off seasons. If any star players hit free agency you can be sure they will be interested in signing in San Jose
Great episode, JD.
Upgrading the defense is the only focus, and you’re right that Celebrini increases the urgency. Two 1st round picks in the teens in 2025 is what landed Noah Dobson for the Habs. The Sharks are probably looking for a different profile, but two equivalent picks might land an Owen Power this offseason. The Sharks have invested a lot in their amateur scouts and they have done a great job, but the pro scouts might get the nod here soon.
It is absolutely insane how fast the timeframe changed because of what Celebrini is doing.
Last summer the Sharks drafted Ravensbergen, and the discussion was "well, he's likely not making an NHL impact for about 4 or 5 years, no need to rush." Then they drafted Haoxi Wang, and the discussion was "it's a big swing, he'll probably play one more year in juniors, likely at least 2 years in the NCAA, then Barracuda, he'll maybe be a Shark in about 5 years. No need to rush."
There's a lot of those "might take another couple years" assets that might end up being turned into a "not quite as high of a ceiling, but he's there now" type player. It's just so weird how we went from "a few years out" to where next season the foot might be on the pedal.
Signing legit talent via free agency will be a long shot since the raising cap means free agents have just signed with their current teams. Getting talent here will mean trading for them
Just give it time dont rush
tank one last year since we have 3 picks in first 2 rounds. Then it's over, off to the races.
I think trading for Wormwood was a big mistake….he’s only played 90 more NHL games than Eklund and is 30, I’d rather just take the loss and trade him while we can. Not worth $6 million a year
GMMG is hoping to turn some of these average players into picks to refil the depth. The big issue is will they actually use players like Musty, Wang, etc.
Top 4 dmen is the priority
I agree with all your arguments JD! The fans that want us to tank don’t realize that Celebrini might leave. He never said he wanted to be on our team forever and he doesn’t seem to particularly like San Jose as a city. Giving him the C won’t suddenly make him loyal to us, look at the Quinn Hughes case. I know it’s a completely different situation than we have but the point is: Players are not afraid to leave the team that drafted them anymore even when they’re the captain. So the only thing keeping Celebrini on the team is if we’re winning and if teammates are helping the team win. This team needs Celebrini for the next 20 years and if that can’t happen, at least for the next 10 to 15 years. So you gotta keep him happy. Not trying to say they have to do every single thing the kid wants because you create a monster if you do that but you gotta do most of what’s within reach to make him happy and that way he will want to stay. That’s why the focus this year should be solely on defense. Like you said in your argument, our prospect pool is one of the best. We already have great forwards, no need to acquire any from other teams. Call up Cagnoni and Noah Allan to be core pieces of defense with Dickinson. Then acquire a few dmen and boom, team is perfect. They need to believe in our young core more. That’s why the coach needs to change. We need a 60+ year old coach with a lot of experience and this team with our young core will be unbeatable. But this team is still stuck in the “veterans and young core balance” mindset. That’s why the coach needs to leave, he criticizes young players in public for tiny mistakes but doesn’t say a thing about the veterans that make big mistakes that costs us games all the time. Not trying to say to get rid of all the veterans. Wennberg, Toffoli etc those type of guys are valuable as players and as locker room guys so they should stay but the other veterans need to leave and open up space for the young core that will actually make an impact.
If Celebrini signs a 3 year contract with us after his ELC, we’ll know it’s so over for us. That’s why the team needs to make it work NOW to show him there’s hope, that the team has potential for the cup. So that he can sign that big boy 8 year contract with us. That’s what the fans that want us to tank don’t understand. Want us to tank? Sure but we lose Celebrini. You cool with that? I’m sure no one is. So we gotta follow this path and this video is the perfect explanation for it. We have the pieces already with the Barracuda, they’re not being utilized though. Call up Cagnoni, Noah Allan, Musty, Bysted and let them build the future with Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Misa, Dickinson and the other young players along with only a few veterans like Wennberg and Toffoli. Our team will be a beast like that.
