Zach Werenski will head to Washington D.C. for the State of the Union address

  1. Disappointed but unfortunately, not surprised. I was hoping Zach would be above this and wanting to get back to Columbus.

  2. Fuck him all the rest of this worthless USA team. Making fun of the women’s team with the pedo in chief and drinking with Patel who is spending our taxpayer money instead of arresting everyone in the Epstein files.

  3. And?

Some people are gonna freak out about this, but they just won the first Gold since 1980. This is, literally, once in a lifetime. They’re gonna go to DC and do some PR stuff, then come home.

  4. My two cents is I get that (probably) 90+ % of American NHL players are conservative. I’d rather him not go but that’s not my choice. I just hope he just stands there for pics and doesn’t say much.

I’m not surprised at all about any of this. This is partly why I wanted Canada to win yesterday. Ugh

  5. Zach, you have practice. It’s only an hour and a half back. Get back to Columbus now.

  6. We’ve known Zach supports the current president of the United States for almost a decade, and I’m sure he isn’t the only member of USA hockey who does.

No idea why he’s getting singled out rn.

  7. He’s gonna sit up there in the upper balcony along with other teammates. They’re gonna stand up and get a standing ovation when the president acknowledges them, and then they’re gonna sit down. Who gives a F?

  8. It’s not about being conservative. It’s about supporting, nevertheless openly, the sexist, racist, pedophile president. There are lines in the sand that can be drawn. He could have declined and chose not to.

  9. That’s extremely sad but not surprising. Shame the administration has to insert themselves into this and shame on the Men’s teams for not standing up for the Women’s team after that farce of a phone call last night. You really think they would try to spin the PR after that made it out of the locker room.

  10. Trump is having immigrants in Columbus kidnapped right now, but this doesn’t bother Zach I guess.

  11. As a Black hockey fan, I can’t act surprised. It’s demographically speaking a good chance most of the players support than man. 🤷🏾‍♂️

  12. Depends on their interactions I’d say. Receiving a call and invite from the president is something they’ll likely never be offered again (unless they win gold again lol) so you never know if they just want the experience even if they don’t like Trump. I’d rather be honored and praised for once by the people that look at us as a joke. The players are the bigger ones in the room at that moment.

  13. As someone who has voted against him three times, I couldn’t give a flying fuck if Werenski attends and I think it’s weird if you do.

  14. I have been really trying to “keep politics out of sports” because ignorance is bliss and I enjoy the respite from that bs that hockey brings.  I know the players are mostly all conservative, I’ve tried to ignore it because I don’t look to hockey players for advice on breaking news, much like they don’t look to me for advice on a one-timer.  I even try to ignore the annual Stanley Cup Visits the White House event because it’s happened for forever under multiple administrations.

That said, the players are making it really hard to keep politics out of sports by bringing Kash into the locker room, dapping up the POTUS on the phone, and parading it around.  If they want the benefit of the doubt, they should at least give us the ability to doubt!
