Multiple NHL teams are circling the St. Louis Blues star centre, and while Montreal isn’t at the front of the line, they’re very much in the conversation. The Blues are believed to have interest in young Habs defencemen, including Kaiden Guhle, and prospect Michael Hage is a name that continues to surface in trade discussions.

So what would it actually cost Kent Hughes to land a true No. 1 centre?
Would Montreal move Guhle? Is Hage untouchable?
And are the Canadiens willing to outbid other NHL contenders?

Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico break down the latest trade buzz, realistic packages, cap implications, and whether the Habs should push their chips in for Thomas.

Is this the move that accelerates the rebuild — or a price too steep to pay?

  1. Some of you obviously have no clue of players value , Hage is nowhere the caliber of Robert Thomas , not even close 🤦‍♂ having said that , if the habs are gonna pay the big price than StLouis will hav3 to take a bad contract in return (Gallagher)

But let’s be serious , I Garantee that no big talented and young player(s) are coming Montreal’s way before or at the deadline

Hughes will come out and claim that Suzuki told him what to do again 🤦‍♂

I’d be happy if they traded Laine and a pick(s) or prospect(s) for a big physical 4th liner

  2. I like thomas but I'm worry about the price and the fact thomas play a similar style than suzuki.
I would be more interested on a Quinton Byfield type of center and return slaf on the first line

  3. If a package of Zharovsky, Kapanen, Engrstrom, 1st, 2nd doesn't get it done, then so be it. I'm not trading Hage or Guhle. If they want any of Struble, Reinbacher, Beck instead of the pieces I listed, then that's fine too. Maybe they see some value in Laine and would take his contract for nothing?

  4. Robert Thomas is a fine player and his skill set would be welcomed in Montreal. That said, I would hesitate to include Hage, Guhle, a first round pick and others for anyone, up to and possibly including McDavid this season even if it could be fit under the cap. There are still holes for the Habs to fill when it comes to defensive play, which affects goaltending. Stay the course, pick up an adequate third pair d-man for the right side, as Arber would need more playing time to be effective. As much as I value his truculence, if a game goes to overtime in the playoffs, it's doubtful that Arber would play a lot, putting more pressure on the other 5 d-men, which is why the team, for this season anyway, needs a more reliable defensive defenseman.

  5. The habs cannot trade 1st rounder before knowing the position where they will draft , when they traded for Dach, newhook and Dobson they knew which picks they were trading . The Maple Leafs morons trade 1st rounders blindly, see how that works for them

  6. Habs current goaltending and defense do not support adding offense now. They are already top 5 in offense. They can't hold multi-goal leads. Is Thomas going to give them 3 goal leads instead of 2 goal leads? Maybe. I'd feel better with better G and D.

The G starts next season with Fowler. The D needs Arber playing more, Guhle being healthy and Engstrom instead of Struble. The Window starts in the 27-28 season with cap room from Anderson and Gally's contracts off the books, Hage in the lineup and more experience for the core. That's when they can get a free agent who's 28-29, matching Suzuki and Caufield's age and experience and perhaps a physical, stay-at-home D.

  7. You give St Louis whatever they want for Thomas, except Fowler….Hage cant even win faceoffs. Players like Thomas are NEVER available, and I'm sorry, Hage will never be as good as Thomas.

  8. What I can’t get out of my head is
Why are the Blues so bad this year? Seems fairly obvious that they have internal issues. Sorry Marco.
And we could Not replace Guhle’s
physicality and would be no further ahead.

  9. Montreal aren’t struggling to score goals , Montreal aren’t struggling in offensive defensemen . Montreal are struggling in net and size and physically

They need a big mean asshole on the fourth line , a guy that will neutralize other teams goons and take pressure off xhekaj and Anderson . The whole team would play better knowing that there’s a psycho prick ready to kill in their lineup

  10. What's lost in all this trade-to-bolster-the-lineup talk is if Montreal's management just said "Dobes is our #1" and he gives the club a .905 save percentage on the season, they move from hopeful to true cup contenders.

  11. how about no? like thats way to much, ghule is a rediculous defenceman, and if stays healthy will be a top pair on st louis eventually with a stud and we would look dumb to give that along with hage a first and another peice, just way to much, lets see what we got with hage, keeping the rest around him will make us a better team then stripping for thomas, reinbacher, kapenen, 1st beck is most i would do

  12. I'm honestly fine if they don't do anything major. While Thomas is a good center, I believe that this team needs to develop from the inside out.

I don't get why people are so quick to rush and trade guys who might turn into better pieces than the one you're trading for.

  13. Beyond dumb. They are not in a win position now, against Colorado. Secondly, he's the same size as Suzuki. Thirdly, he's another right shot center. Hughes has overpaid for a few players already. He overpaid for Texier's contract. No, a dumb move to try to get Thomas with his value and a bidding war starting.

  14. Call Lucas Robert Thomas's stats over his eight course years in the NHL he has a total of 119 goals over eight year's so divide 119 by 8 that gives you an average of 14.875 goals per season and 311 assists in eight seasons so if you take the goals and assists it gives you an average of 53.75 points per season I mean Hague and other prospects that are in the farm system I think they can score more than 15 goals per season playing on a top line I'm not selling the farm for this type of player I mean even Gallagher at some point was scoring 20 goals in five seasons . D'Amico you keep saying yourself trust the process I'm not trading these prospects especially our top defenseman,

  15. Forget Robert Thomas. Really, overhyped. and not worth Michael Hage one on one, let alone adding others. If St. Louis will take Patrick Laine, Adam Engstrom Joshua Roy, Owen Beck, and a 3rd round, Id do that deal. Nothing else.

  16. No need for Thomas , though more depth is always a plus, but they need a really reliable great goalie for at least 2 years or Habs ain't going forward

  17. I always harp on this, and it seems to be forgotten. When guys know they aren't "wanted" on a roster for whatever reason, their leverage inherently gets a little more soupy.

  18. Regarding Thomas for Guhle + Hage + drafts, I recommend that Kent Hughes NOT employ the Fred Flintstone management system at the table with his scouts with this script: (1) Whose baby is that? (2) What's your angle? (3) I'll buy that…. Also, don't apply it at 15:16. Pickford is a right-handed defender, and we will need one to replace Carrier at some point, plus we don't even know with 100% certainty how Reinbacher is going to work out. I'd almost trade Guhle sooner, even though Pickford is still an unknown.

  19. The bidding war for Thomas will make the price tag go up a lot, whatever package you have in mind, you probably need to add to it.

There are probably 10 teams that could be interested and coming up with a a valid trade package (Bos, Det, Utah, Buf, Sea, Car, Colombus, Min, Mtl, etc)…

The only thing that might reduce the cost is if Thomas doesn't want to play for most of them and use his 'no trade' clause or if the Blues don't want to trade him within the division/conference…

  20. Here's what I'm going for Monaghan; O'Reilly, kadri, there's no way I'm over paying for Thomas!!!!! Kapanen , struble , engstrom or a first that's it ! Didn't wait all this time for breaking up my team now !!!

  21. The price is much too high to acquire Robert Thomas. Yes, he is a good player but not at an elite level. 80 points per season is his plateau, playing on the first line and being on the first power play; two conditions that will not happen with the Canadians. Michael Hage is an untouchable at the moment

  22. Trading Hage this early. Nah. This team still needs to figure out the goalie situation is, and giving another 1st rounder away is not worth it.

A Suzuki/Hage 1-2 punch would be way better for longer.

  23. Suzuki and Thomas in the 1/2 would make the Habs an instant contender. This is a bag of mixed emotions but at 26, Thomas would put Habs in a 5 year window

  24. More time without trading = more time to evaluate what we have now and how what we have now is able to perform in playoffs. Wait until summer after evaluation and before making a major move. Worked out well with Dobson last year.
