Hunter Greene Concerning Injury Update: What This Means for the Cincinnati Reds | MLB News & Rumors

Nick Kirby, Trace Fowler and Craig Sandlin break down the Hunter Greene injury news.

The Cincinnati Reds received concerning news on ace right-hander Hunter Greene, and in this episode we break down everything you need to know about the latest injury report, what it means in the short term, and how it could impact the Reds’ outlook heading into the season.

According to the report, Greene underwent an MRI on his elbow after experiencing discomfort. While the full extent of the issue is still being evaluated, any time a pitcher is dealing with elbow soreness, it immediately raises eyebrows — especially when that pitcher is the staff ace and one of the hardest throwers in Major League Baseball. In today’s video, we walk through what we know, what we don’t know, and why Reds fans have reason to be both cautious and patient as more information becomes available.

Greene has developed into the clear No. 1 starter in Cincinnati’s rotation. After showing flashes early in his career, he took a significant step forward with improved command, maturity on the mound, and the ability to pitch deep into games. His fastball velocity, wipeout slider, and growing confidence made him one of the most electric arms in the National League. That’s why this update feels so significant — the Reds’ ceiling this season is closely tied to Greene’s health and performance.

In the episode, we discuss realistic injury scenarios. Is this precautionary imaging to rule something out? Could this be a minor inflammation issue that requires short rest? Or does this open the door to a more serious concern that could affect the early portion of the season? We explain how teams typically handle elbow soreness in today’s game and why organizations are far more aggressive about imaging than they were even five years ago.

We also break down the potential ripple effects on the Reds’ rotation. If Greene were to miss time, who steps up? Does this open the door for one of the young arms to seize an opportunity? How would the rotation line up to begin the season? We analyze the depth options and discuss whether Cincinnati has enough internal pitching to withstand an early setback.

Beyond the on-field implications, we talk about the bigger-picture impact. The Reds entered this season with legitimate playoff aspirations. A healthy Greene is central to those hopes. His ability to neutralize top offenses and pitch like a frontline starter changes the math in a postseason race. Without him at full strength, the margin for error shrinks considerably.

At the same time, we stress the importance of not overreacting. MRIs are common. Elbow discomfort does not automatically mean structural damage. The Reds have every reason to be cautious with a pitcher who represents a massive part of their present and future. Protecting Greene long-term may ultimately matter more than pushing him to be ready for one early-season start.

In this breakdown, we provide context, perspective, and analysis — not panic. We examine the language used in the report, discuss historical comparisons of similar situations around MLB, and evaluate how concerned fans realistically should be right now.

Be sure to watch the full episode for a detailed breakdown of the injury report, what comes next in the evaluation process, and how this could shape the Reds’ season moving forward. We’ll continue to monitor updates closely and provide analysis as soon as more information becomes available.

If you’re a Reds fan, this is a critical moment to understand. Health will define this team’s ceiling — and Hunter Greene is right at the center of it all.

  1. Injuries happen all year every year. It's just reality and a advantage the rich teams have over poor teams. Just gotta hope the best players don't get hurt

  2. Why would you pitch hurt in the playoffs? He pitched terrible and lost us a playoff game. Trade this dude. Kinda sick of his stuff

  3. been waiting for the first big injury concern for 2026 reds and of course it's their ace….next will be if not a pitcher, sal stewart….putting this out there so it DOESN'T HAPPEN, at least the reds will have CES to fall back on(or lowe) but DON'T SLEEP ON CES AND A MASSIVE RETURN

  4. So, they say that his UCL is fine. But, he has some bone spurs, which may need to be (surgically) addressed. IF that's what it is, it's not ideal, but it's not a season ending thing.

  5. It's like groundhog day every year with Hunter….Just a matter of time. Maybe he can just learn to be a knuckleball pitcher….Too soft to be a power pitcher…

  6. What is really concerning is that the Reds appear to have awful beat reporters. These situations are so confusing because you never really get answers to what has happened, when it happened, and what happens next. You can watch it in the clips we see of reporters asking questions – they ask a couple of leading questions to get the quotes they want for their article and then they have no further questions. It's awful. I've read a number of articles today and it's not clear to me when Hunter last saw a doctor or what information is new and what is information from last year. Just the humble opinion of an accountant who loves him some Cincinnati Reds.
