BREAKING: Andrew Abbott Named Opening Day Starter | Cincinnati Reds Roster Projections | MLB News
Greg Kuffner reacts to the Cincinnati Reds naming Andrew Abbott their Opening Day starter.
——————–
The Cincinnati Reds have made a big decision for the 2026 season: Andrew Abbott has been named the Opening Day starting pitcher against the Boston Red Sox on March 26 at Great American Ball Park!
In this video, Greg dives deep into what this huge honor means for Andrew Abbott moving forward. Coming off a breakout 2025 campaign where he earned All-Star honors with a stellar 2.87 ERA, career-high innings, and elite consistency, getting the nod as Opening Day starter is a major vote of confidence from manager Terry Francona. We break down how this spotlights Abbott’s growth, his ace-caliber stuff, and what fans can expect from him leading the rotation early in the year.
But what does this say about Hunter Greene? The hard-throwing righty was the presumed favorite and held the honor in 2025, but recent elbow stiffness and ongoing medical evaluations have sidelined him from ramping up fully. Greg explains the implications for Greene’s role, recovery timeline, and how this shift reshapes the Reds’ rotation dynamics heading into a playoff-contending push.
Plus, we dissect the latest Opening Day roster projections from trusted Reds beat writer Mark Sheldon (MLB.com). His lineup and pitching staff predictions include some surprises, plus key bullpen arms and position battles that could define Cincinnati’s 26-man roster on Opening Day.
Whether you’re a die-hard Reds fan tracking every roster move or just excited for baseball to return, this breakdown covers all the angles on Abbott’s milestone, Greene’s situation, and Sheldon’s full projections.

Were so fucked
Be calling the Bullpen in the 5th
Abbott should have been opening day starter anyway. He was the only All Star pitcher last year. (or at least starter)
3 comments and 2 of them are negative. What the hell is wrong with you people? I’m so happy that I am an optimistic Reds fan. I am old enough to have seen the Big Red Machine and the 1990 Reds team. I got news for you negative ppl, nobody gave the Reds a chance to win it all in 1990 but they dominated everybody and won the WS in a sweep against a team that no one gave them a chance to defeat. This year is going to be special, believe it or don’t believe it but do not run them down and then jump on the bandwagon later in the season.
Why have the Reds not locked down Abbott yet? Dude is a bulldog! Our best pitcher
Hell yeah 🤘
Green always falls short in pressure
#ExtendAbbott
Hunter Greene TOO soft ….
