RALEIGH, N.C. — And who says there are not eyebrow-raising headlines and stories after the NHL trade deadline? It seems Edmonton Oilers teammates are not happy with Tristan Jarry, and there was an incident at practice. Nick Kypreos thinks he has solved the mystery blockbuster that didn’t get to the finish line on Friday. And we pulled back to see the larger chess match that Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas might be playing, and it specifically involves Evgeni Malkin.

Also in the Daily, Columbus yielded a point to the Penguins in the playoff race, the Nashville Predators almost traded Jonathan Marchessault and Steve Stamkos, and there are questions whether Brad Marchand and other Florida Panthers are done for the year.

A couple of notes today. Thank you all so much for the Raleigh dining suggestions. Unfortunately, I rarely rent a car, especially after my little (and very expensive) issues in Alberta a couple of years ago. Last night, my dining choices were limited to Wendy’s, Circle K hot dogs, or Waffle House. And of course, I went Waffle House for that greasy goodness. So, for dinner, I thoroughly enjoyed some eggs, grits, bacon, and coffee.

I found out that another quarter mile up the road were a Cracker Barrel and Hooters. I didn’t even know Hooters was still in business, but I’ll pass.

And please accept my apologies. Reading back the report card on Monday morning, I was mortified by the number of typos. Now, I mistakenly apologized publicly via X, which only allowed some of life’s more successful humans to criticize me and ask that the person who runs Pittsburgh Hockey Now fire me (Yeah, they’re smart, eh?)

I also know that I fixed a lot of them before publishing, and I don’t know what happened. So, I have upgraded some things on my end and made some changes with editing software (no longer using Grammarly) because it was clashing with our website. Regardless, that was embarrassing, and I apologize for the sloppiest story of the season.

Onward. Upward.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Vince Communale has been a wonderful addition around here. Monday, Vince did the math and the flight miles. The Penguins are THE most traveled team in the NHL this season, and he’s got the receipts to prove it. I also realized just how crazy my season has been, too. Take a look at the math behind the Penguins’ road trips this season.

OK. Not everyone got it, but that’s all right, especially when it’s an abstract. When I pulled back for an overview of the situation, I saw what could very well be Dubas playing chess at the NHL trade deadline. He largely stood pat because the team earned the chance to see it through, but is it that simple, or was there another reason he kept the band together? Is there a Dubas gambit on Evgeni Malkin and the Penguins rebuild?

Sometimes the fastest way to prove you’re right is to give others what they want.

Steelers Now: TRADE! The Mormon Tabernacle Choir was singing Handel’s Messiah. The sun shone directly upon Acrisure Stadium. For a moment, it felt like there were more than five bathroom stalls in the Southside locker room. The Steelers finally got their WR2 in a trade with the Colts. Alan Saunders has everything–Michael Pittman is now a Pittsburgh Steelers WR.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

NHLtraderumors.me: Elliotte Friedman referenced it in the 32 Thoughts podcast. Oilers broadcaster Bob Stauffer reported it on Friday. There are tensions between Tristan Jarry and some teammates after Jarry ripped the team’s defensive performance following a lopsided loss. And teammates let him know about it during practice. Dave Littman compiled multiple reports on the growing Oilers tension.

Yikes. Jarry’s .862 save percentage with the Oilers isn’t going to buy any leeway.

The Tennessean: It’s good to see some coverage of the Predators again (we tried, but staffing issues and the small audience were killers). It seems GM Barry Trotz “came pretty close” to trading Stamkos and Marchessault.

Sportsnet Video: On the daily radio show, Nick Kypreos said he heard that the big mystery trade that didn’t get done at the deadline and that everyone has been chasing was between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs involving Matthew Knies.

NHL.com: I suppose we’ll make Columbus updates a Dan’s Daily thing. Quite frankly, it looks like Columbus got a couple of late breaks with the refs (only getting a minor despite drawing blood with a high stick), and they tied the game late to earn a point, but lost to LA in OT.

Florida Hockey Now: The Florida Panthers’ injury situation is rough. Is Brad Marchand done for the year?

And George Richards tackles the big question down there–should the Panthers tank for a better pick?

TSN Video: Can they do it? Can the Buffalo Sabres shock the world and win the Stanley Cup?

I don’t know if he’s getting credit for it, but Jason Zucker is the AJ Burnett of the Sabres. Sometimes, teams with the stink on them need a brash, loud guy who just doesn’t care about history.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Simon Nemec’s name was definitely out there leading up to the NHL trade deadline. It’s over, right? Wrong. James Nichols writes that Nemec’s future with the New Jersey Devils is cloudier than ever.
