I feel like this would be so easy to legislate, but it’ll never happen. If a player faces a disciplinary hearing and suspension for a play in which another player is injured, that player’s suspension lasts as long as it takes for the other player to be cleared medically for play.
There are plays that are bang-bang, incidental, not completely malicious, or just accidents that cause injury. There’s context on every play. There’s a committee that meets to consider that context. This isn’t something that would have to be applied unless it’s deemed to be appropriate.
Concuss a guy with a headshot, miss a week or two. Tear his MCL with a knee on knee? Miss 6-8 months. Bertuzzi a guy and end his career? Well…
That would clear this shit out of the game pretty quickly.

there’s no argument you can make to defend it at all. Every established player safety checkbox is checked. First he clearly extends the knee and targets matthews knee…he crosses a significant amount of space with his knee extended just to get matthews in the knee. So there is intent. Gudas is a repeat offender not just for suspensions but specifically for targetting peoples knees… including taking out crosby’s knee not even a month ago. There was a significant injury on the play and a star player is now out for the season. This is the most textbook slamdunk case for a maximum possible suspension. It’s also worth pointing out first time offender Jason Spezza got more games than this. Rielly got just as many games as a first offender…for a crosscheck with no injury. I seriously might be done with this fucking league and their panther safety department.

The team has zero team comeradery . This comes from the leaders on down. In Matthews 10 years as a leaf has he ever stuck up for any of his teammates in similar circumstances? The answer is no, so the first instinct for his teammates is not to stick up for him. As captain Matthews sets the tone and expectations for the team.
Past leaf Captains set a different tone. If Sundin took a cheap shot, Robert’s or Tucker made them pay.
If Gilmour was hit late, Clark made them pay.
If Sittler was touched Tiger stepped in.
This team has a bad culture, hence never getting far in the playoffs.
Mathews and before him Tavares have made this culture, now they pay the price.
The problem isnāt just that Gudas only got 5 games. Itās that no one, NO ONE on the leafs team even attempted to stand up for Matthews on the ice.
There should have been a bench clearing brawl over that dirty intentional hit.
