Triolo to be the primary SS, Gonzales and Yorke to split time at 3B

  1. All things considered, I actually think Triolo being the everyday SS and Gonzales and Yorke splitting 3B time is the best option right now. Triolo isn’t an elite defender at SS, but he’s still a good defensive SS and 3B isn’t that difficult to play unless you’re completely incompetent defensively or have the yips with your arm. The biggest worry I have there is Gonzales doesn’t really have the arm you want out of a 3B, but I like him defensively at 3B more than I do at SS.

That said, Gonzales’ arm isn’t any weaker than Hayes’ arm, so maybe needing an elite arm at 3B isn’t really true anymore.

  2. I think this works out fine. I’m guessing they’re planning on griffin being ready sooner rather than later, and if that’s the case it doesn’t really make sense to trade for a third baseman.

  3. I just don’t feel like Gonzo played third all that much for someone they planned to be the starting 3b. Maybe I’m wrong on that though.

  4. I really like Yorke. Watched a ton of 3A games last year and he was definitely a top players down there. Up to him to prove he’s not a tweener, but he definitely belongs

Gonzo is going to play a lot of 2B as well. Lowe will need some spells of rest- which is fine.

  5. This team had a chance to be pretty darn good but now they’re running Triolo out there every day. Embarrassing

  6. Woah woah woah.. I thought the whole thing with Triolo at third was because his glove doesn’t translate as well to short but he’s an outstanding defender at third?

  7. Given the lackluster options we have, this is fine.  Nick at 3rd is gonna be quite the adventure though

  8. I can live with this. KG should be good to go sooner than later (we hope) and then we should be good.

I feel like the N.L. Central is weaker, although I may be wrong, so I’m liking our chances.

  9. I like this change.

Today: Triolo is the glove you want on the field every day. Don’t want him bouncing back and forth to get ABs for both Yorke and NG.

Tomorrow: When Griffin arrives, if Nick Gonzalez is hitting well (significantly better than Triolo), and is passable at 3B, he stays on the field. If not, NBD to slide Triolo to third.

This gives you the most runway for Triolo, Gonzalez, and Yorke to establish some offensive consistency and positions the team to make an informed decision when Griffin takes over.

  10. I was way down on Triolo for most of last year but he ended up leading the position players in fWAR last year (3rd in bWAR).

  11. Triolo is great at 3rd – why wouldn’t you just keep him there as a placeholder and slide Gonzalez to SS, where his ok arm would play up better?

  12. We were so close to getting okamato. I was hoping griffin would shine and be at short. Then okamato at third. Instead, triolo and yorke. That’s a huge huge difference. The difference in being really good and being average.

  13. Nick Yorke? I’m personally more of a Nick Sargent guy, but I’ll give him a shot.

  14. I hate this so much. Triolo is not an SS, nor will he ever be passable as one. Leave his glove and no bat at 3b if you’re not going to acquire someone before the season starts. Let Gonzales handle SS. He has the better range. They should have kept Alika as the defensive replacement until Griffin is hopefully ready this year, and then you can DFA him to clear the roster spot. There is no viable reason for Billy Cook to be on this team, none at all.
