All the more reason to get assets now and go younger in WR room! How many competent WRs are needed when you have a good running back and superstar tight end 😏
Pierce got way overpaid for an OK receiver. Why can't we just say, "you're not gonna copy our stupid decisions (Aaron Banks), and we're not going to copy yours." And nobody HAS commanded Banks type money.. so how are you so certain these guys make that money?
Counter argument is that Rasheed Walker wanted $20m+ APY and end up with $4m! LOL. So for every free agent mega-deal, there are examples of super cheap deals too. Good time to extend Kraft and Wyatt though, when they are both injured and have less bargaining power.
Everyone also thought that Sheed Walker would get more than Dan Moore. It is possible that markets stagnate and or regress, so it's a bit early to talk about this imo. That being said, Watson needs to stay healthy for a whole season. There is no way Packers should pay him Pierce money if he cant stay on the field.
This years draft also has basically CW9 2.0 in it, Bryce Lance. Wouldnt surprise me, if the Packers take him in advance, WR is a sneaky need in this years draft with Watson, Wicks and Reed all in a contract year and all 3 not being consistent enough.
I cannot envision the offense as constructed justifying the Pierce contract. Too much ball distribution and injury concerns make me want to move Watson instead. Could you get both Reed and Wicks for the price of Watson?
Interesting episode Andy. You help us to understand the “ why” or “why not” when it comes to why the GPB do what they do.
I do not feel comfortable giving Watson a 4yr 120 million dollar deal
I recall that draft when Watson and Pierce were the 2 tall guys set to go in rnd 2. Packers should sign Watson now. It only gets more expensive from here.
I'll say it. Watson isn't a #1 WR and Green Bay will regret paying him as one. Two games with 5 catches, the rest 4 or less. He's had 2 or fewer catches in 18 games. 63% completion percentage. Limited route tree, and not a go to guy. And don't give me the "he's essential in helping others get open." That just means we have a bunch of guys that can't beat man coverage. Most WR's dream of getting man coverage. $30 million per for a 35 catch 600 yard guy would be a huge mistake. A #1 WR doesn't completely whiff on that play in Chicago. Most will be blinded by a 50 yard catch every 4 games, but that play in Chicago is one that 90% of WR's make in their sleep.
There is no way
I’m. Not giving k dog a dime moving forward
The fact that you are comparing LVN to Mafe is a problem in its self…
Pierce was also playing most of that with an absolutely shitty QB, Packers could have taken him without trading up and also had Nik Bonitto, Bryan Cook, Abraham Lucas or James Cook. Watson also still has some massively bad drops.
Just watch, this is the season wicks and Watson goes off healthy. The packers just pikachu meme-ing at contract time.
I wouldn’t give CV a ham sammich in his next contract… let someone else pay $15 million per year. He isn’t good.
I don't think I re-sign Watson. I simply can't trust him to stay healthy on a big contract. I'd attempt to trade him, and I'd probably sign Reed and get another WR in the draft this year.
Yeah, we're drafting somebody at WR.
That TuTu Atwell deal will forever be mentioned by Andy 😂😂
The Green Bay Packers typically backload players’ contracts from a cap perspective. So just because Christian Watson, for example, would make $29 million per year, doesn’t mean that he would exhaust $29 million in cap space for the Green Bay Packers in 2027 if he’s extended. While prices for players mostly stayed flat from 2025 to 2026, there could be a big boom in 2027, depending on how many league partners are willing to pony up more money to keep the NFL happy. That television money is the primary driver for cap increases, which are already in the $25 million per year range. So an okay deal for Christian Watson could look much better down the line when the cost of all non-rookie contract players ends up jumping big time after these negotiations are done. Go Pack Go 💚💚💛💛🧀🧀
Is it necessary for everybody to get the highest contract?
Wondale is more important id imagine though. With the giants always missinf their number 1 receiver, wondale had to move into that role
Pierce also played in a horrible offense with some trash QBs. The main thing is health I would pay Watson top of the market in a heartbeat but I know for sure he's missing games next season, how many who knows.
I wouldnt mind these contracts for people like watson or kraft…. as long as…. it is games played incentive somewhere along the lines rather then blind guarantees.
The comp for Tucker Kraft will be Sam LaPorta.
I think the new backdrop is going to be a scratch and sniff Luigies Pepperoni Pizza pattern.
