RECKONING: Orlando Magic’s Depth WOES Unveiled, Paolo Banchero Dominates as Injuries DERAIL Season

The Orlando Magic’s Playoff hopes hang by a thread after a sixth straight loss. Paolo Banchero looked like a superstar again, carrying the Magic into the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers with another 36 points. But his team struggled to step up and support him and the defense never stiffened, allowing Donovan Mitchell and James Harden to outshine him.

It is clear — and has been clear — that there are major roster deficiencies. Already there are big questions that the Magic need to ask: How much have this season’s shortcomings been credited to injuries and how much is a deep flaw to the roster?

Injuries have been a constant story for this team since November. They have rarely seen their projected opening night lineup together. But while that has certainly knocked the team back into the Play-In race, it is not the only reason the team has struggled.

Orlando’s front office invested too much in defenders who did not have the offensive skills to keep up in the new NBA. The team’s depth has been stretched too thin and the Magic cannot field a roster with enough Playoff-ready players for this time of year.

The good news is that Franz Wagner is starting to make progress in his return from a high ankle sprain, practicing with the Osceola Magic on Monday. His potentially imminent return could save the Magic’s season in the final 10 games.

  1. Decisions must be made this off-season (in some cases now would be good too) If the players aren't talented enough to grow into their roles, the folks that are scouting & hiring them should be reevaluated, probably replaced (because this level of performance is not an aberration, it's normal for this Organization).
If the players are talented enough but not performing to an acceptable level, the support staff (coaches/physical/medical) should be reevaluated, possibly replaced.
It is the responsibility of the owners to establish an organization- wide culture that promotes profitability through winning by hiring senior management personnel who have a history of success. Orlando Magic history has shown us that ownership is willing to settle for "almost successful". For evidence simply look at who they allowed to be inducted into their team's hall of fame today. I don't know how to fix that.

  2. BAD COACHING, INJURIES, THE BENCH LOOKS LIKE HOSPITAL, REMAINING PLAYERS WITH NO HUNGER AND NO MOTIVATION TO STAY CONSISTENT, WE DON'T LOOK LIKE A DEFENSIVE TEAM ANYMORE, BANCHERO AND WENDELL SHOULD BE GRABBING AT LEAST 10+ REBOUNDS EACH AND EVERY GAME IN A CONSISTENT BASIS TO LIMIT 2ND CHANCE POINTS. WE NEED TO GET BETTER ON 3PTS SHOTS. THIS WHOLE TEAM AND ORGANIZATION IS A DISASTER STARTING FROM THE MANAGEMENT.

  3. We have talent, if I am ownership I would order for the core 4(Bane, Black, Wagner and Banchero) to rest if we end up as a play in team. Time to acquire a head coach like Mike Malone, Taylor Jenkins, man I’ll even take an Adrian griffin(fired after a 30-13 start to a season).

  4. “So many problems the magic have, are simply fixed by putting them in the right roles”- Phillip. This has been my whole argument for everyone discouraging our roster. A good coach makes ok players look good, great coaches makes ok/good
Players look great. I would argue guys are scared to lose minutes by attempting to be scorers, we have seen Jase and Jett go off, then lose minutes, when they require minutes they are more conservative.

  5. That’s why you play your players early in the season to see what they can contribute too the game. Instead they play a certain amount of players given no game experience.
Now team is depleted. I watch Poalo get suck with ball. I keep saying they need not let Poalo handle ball give it to bane or point and feed Poalo off the move or down low. Because when he shoots that leaves only WCJ to rebound. At this point we should just don’t worry about playoffs and play the guys we are evaluating to see if they should be on the team. Instead of going to play in or playoff and get embarrass. Why they don’t use bane and Poalo in the pick and roll.

  6. Players Magic should not bring back. Jonathan Issac, Goga, and Mo Wagner trade the. For more high flying rebounding with some shot blocking athletic PF or Centers.
Trade Suggs and Ab for starting point guard other teams have to respect like Lamelo or Ja Morant type that can create shots off dribble and pass with a back up point guard/ shooting guard.
Bring Stan Van Gundy back his offense with Dwight would fit Poalo down low with shooters around him. ISO Poalo is not it. Can he create yes but he gets stuck with ball.

  7. Nothing is gonna change until we remove this Front Office. This rebuild has been soooooo slow, and this team still doesn’t make sense. Moseley has to go, but until we get new, more aggressive eyes in this team, we are going nowhere. Two straight years with no moves at the deadline while the team had clear needs and was floundering, is ridiculous. Jonathan Isaac still being on this team is ridiculous. Having no shooting is ridiculous. Having no PG when your superstar has literally begged for one is ridiculous. Drafting Jett Howard over Keyonte George is ridiculous!

  8. Banchero is a black hole for this team. This team is trash. Jamaal trash as well. Blow it up. Makes no sense. Its banchero or nothing, and when its banchero, its not enough. Its broke.

  9. Bane struggling on the low..not enough healthy players to contend,no defense at guard since we lost kcp,no scoring bench, Jamal Cain only bright spot..I like his upside

  10. Bye bye Coach Mosley.

It’s unfortunate but the players are either lost , don’t care, or actually trying to lose to get new a new coach in.

I think Mosley just isn’t able to extract talent. Injuries suck but so does no offensive identity.

  11. The problem with team starts at the front office with Weltman. This team needed desperately a mid-season trade at the trade deadline and Weltman stood pat once again meanwhile the East got even tougher even tougher with Atlanta and Cleveland saving their seasons and even overtaking the magic in the standings. A good mid -season trade does 2 things. The first thing (which is obvious) is your getting the players that you needed after looking at your weaknesses for the 1st half of the season. And secondly it renews the team's morale because they are excited to play with new players especially if they were struggling. This team needed this desperately!! We definitely could have traded away J.I. (before he got injured) and others to get an actual playmaking point guard and definitely could have got a center that excels in rebounding and protecting the paint or maybe just another flat-out scorer to make up for Franz's 20+ points we miss out on every night.

  12. I can’t think of a team that is built to withstand losing 3 key rotation players. Clearly is not the year, but I don’t think the setup is bad. TDS and AB have been finds recently. Could they use another vet or 2 on the bench? Sure. I also think it’s hard to see yourselves as a must win year when your most important players were all drafted in the 2020s

  13. The coach and the fans could bring up the injuries not the person who signed suggs to 5 yrs ji to 5 yrs windell got an extension luckily he hasn't been hurt but weltman signed injury prone players now u can't use the injuries as an excuse

  14. Orlando Magic doesn’t have a center doesn’t have a big man that they can throw the ball two down low and he get a bucket everybody out jumps Wendell Carter he’s slow doesn’t move fast enough doesn’t rebound enough and doesn’t block shots. He’s just not a good center in the NBA. #Facts if Orlando Magic had a seven footer that played down low and not on the three-point line they would be a dominant team. They don’t have a big man. Sorry 😢 😢
