  1. I think people aren’t factoring in just how bad Houston’s offence is. Or rather how much more difficult it is for Flemings to score right now compared to what it’ll look like next year when he is in the NBA. Flemings has by far the weakest offensive supporting cast of any of the guards in his draft range- Wagler, Acuff, Burries, Brown Jr, Philon.

Houston plays incredibly slow which constantly forces Flemings to have to create in the half court against a set defence. They constantly play 2 players (Cenac and Tugler) who are complete zeroes on offence. This allows the defence to key on Houston’s 3 guards.

Neither Uzan or Sharp are particularly athletic nor are they elite shooters. They are good shooters but they don’t have the same gravity as say Fletcher Loyer on Purdue. There is a big difference between 34% and 38% for Uzan and Sharp respectively from 3 and the 43% that Loyer shot from 3 this season.

If you add this all up this means that the only player on Houston’s roster that has even a chance of consistently creating an advantage for himself or his teammates, is Flemings. That is why Flemings is Houston’s entire offence. If you watch a game, the ball is in his hands almost every possession. Houston’s offence is the exact opposite of what it’ll be like at the NBA. The paint is constantly crowded with Tugler and Cenac and Houston draws no fouls. It’s either 3 pointers (probably off offensive rebounds) or pull up midrange shots from Flemings or maybe a floater from Uzan.

At the NBA level Flemings will be surrounded by better shooters and probably only 1 non perimeter player instead of 2. He will also have at least 1 other teammate who can consistently create his own shot and he won’t play in an offence that insists on walking the ball up the floor just to spam pick and rolls that don’t actually get the defence in rotation.

Compare Flemings’s situation with the guards I mentioned above. Alabama and Arkansas are 2 of the fastest teams in college. Philon and Acuff constantly get out in transition and they are flanked with elite shooting guards in Holloway and Thomas. Burries plays for a loaded Arizona team that played quite fast and Brown Jr played for a Louisville team that also pushed the pace. The only guard that didn’t play for a team pushing the pace was Wagler. Illinois plays quite slow as well but I’d say Illinois has maybe the most talented offensive roster in the country this year.

This isn’t to say I think Flemings could do what Philon or Acuff or Wagler have done this year. I think those 3 specifically have been phenomenal offensive engines for their respective teams. I’m just trying to point out that Flemings was not put in an ideal situation at all. The fact that he finished his season averaging 16/5/4 while shooting 48/39/84 from the floor is a testament to his talent. Add in the defensive upside and that’s why I still have Flemings 5th overall on my board.

  2. Flemings is the worst of the guard prospects. Peterson, Wagler, Mikel brown, philon, Acuff, Burries are all better. Flemings will be a good 3 and d player. I think his nba comp is Cason Wallace.

  3. Still not sold on Acuff. He scored 27 sure but ended up a -27 for the game. Sure some goes on his teammates but he got blown by a few times while I was watching. Just standing flat footed.

  4. Maybe I'm just weird I just don't see it with Wagler. I'm just saying like I don't see it. I don't feel like he's athletic enough I don't feel like he's going to create enough gravity. I just don't see the speed and what's weird is that he's in an offensive system. It's so hard to know what he's going to be because he's actually allowed to play offense some of these other guys aren't in that kind of system. Is he a product of the system or is he a product of being good. I just don't see it man I don't even see an NBA comparison for this guy.

  5. Burries is really intriguing man, reminds me of Jamal Murray. I think he'd fit great with kyrie and cooper… either we're walking away with a great building block moving forward… and a decent chance at top 4

  6. Acuff is a beast on offense but his defense is horrible. He allowed players to blow past him all night. If his defense can't be approved this off season, then I'll take Flemmings, Wagler, or even MBJ.

  7. Acuff is a beast on offense but his defense is horrible. He allowed players to blow past him all night. If his defense can't be approved this off season, then I'll take Flemmings, Wagler, or even Brown.

  8. Acuff is NBA ready and will have better players around him. Flemings is skinny, he doesn't finish well around the basket. Burries has been great the past month. He has great all around offensive game and is good on defense. So should go Acuff, Burries, Wagler, Brown, Flemings

  9. Man i hope Mavs get top 4. I like the guards in this draft but man Peterson, Dybansta, Boozer and Caleb Wilson are at a different level for NBA that Mavs need

  10. Fleming and Brown are falling and might both be available when the Mavs pick.
Fleming was a NON-FACTOR from the three point line in stretches this year
(Finished 1-6 from three in the final four games and had a five game stretch of ZERO MADE THREES 0-7).
For me Brown is a mess. Not a top 10 guy.
Burries is pretty much a flawless guard right now and a top 6-7 pick imo.
I’ve always liked Acuff more than Wagler but his defense is clearly the worse among the guards.
Regardless we will do ok this year.
I’m fascinated what will be there for us at 30.
There’s like 10 guy who look like year one contributors who could be there at 30 (Krivas, Swain, Anderson, Peat, Stirtz,Mirkovic, Cenac, Richmond, Evans, Morez, Mara, Jefferson, Momcilovic).
It’s the most exciting time of the year for this miserable team.

  11. Best case scenario – Mavs get one of Darren Peterson, Wagler, or Dybansta with their lottery pick and then pick up either Chris Cenac, Daylin Swain, or Maleek Thomas with their late first. Also would like any of the Illinois bigs with their lottery pick second round pick

  12. I think that Acuff & Flemings will probably be better pros than Wagner. But Wagner might be the best fit for the Mavs…especially if you do plan on riding with Coop & Ky for the next 3-4 years. If you think that Ky may only have 2 more years then maybe you should go Acuff or Flemings.

But if Ky's got like 4 more years of being KYRIE then give me Wagner. Ky, Wagner, Coop, PJ, Lively is a really nicely balanced starting 5. Got the floor general, got a creator next to him, got Coop who seems capable of the Point Coop stuff, PJ and Lively are really good high post pick n roll guys. And defensively you can work with that!!

  13. Crazy hypothetical,
Say mavs land top 4 pick and Utah or San Antonio comes calling to move up

Utah offers George and their 1st or Spurs offering Harper and their 1st, is anyone opposed if the pick is still late lottery?

  14. I’m sorry but Burries is the pick if he’s there.
A meteoric rise and amazingly consistent.
He’s not a product of a great Arizona team.
He’s the best player on the best team.
The perfect complement to Flagg for a team that wants to lead with their defense but still be explosive offensively.
If he’s the pick then we will know we have quality guys in the draft room.
He starts year one with Flagg, Lively, PJ and Kyrie.
You bring Gafford, Christie, Naji and Our free agent pickup off the bench and walk away from Klay and Martin.
    If you can.
This could be a very good team in
    Seven months.

  15. It's time to hype up Darius Acuff in public and Mikel Brown in private. (the actual pick)

Acuff is way too small and the talent doesn't outweigh the negatives on defense.

  16. Frankly, no one in this draft makes me say — gee — that is a must-have guy. The entire March Madness has been underwhelming. To me, the only can't miss player is Boozer. I could easily see Boozer having a good 15 year career. All the rest? I am just not sure. It makes me think if Dallas gets a super high pick — they might want to trade back. Some of the "lesser" players might actually be better than some of the top players.

  17. Flemings is going to be a bust. He was billed as some defensive prospect, and watching him yesterday did not feel like he made any defensive impact. He's incredibly small and offensively seemed afraid to shoot

  18. I’m still on that Kingston Flemings train. Good size, plays defense. Needs to work on his 3 point shot but he’s athletic. Waggler is to light in the loafers. We still need an on the ball defender
