[Passan] Nico Hoerner’s deal with the Cubs is done and will be for six years and $141 million, sources tell ESPN. It’s the fourth-largest contract ever for a second baseman and locks up the 28-year-old into the 2030s. Defense, running, contact skill — Hoerner does everything well.

  1. Love this so much. You don’t let a player like Nico walk. This also puts a stop to any in season trade talks that may have ended up developing, which is good for my mental health

  2. A couple months ago I was looking at comps and basically thought there was no way Nico would get less than 6/135 on the open market. Cubs giving him a little extra, but I think this is a super fair deal given his production.

  3. So our up the middle defense will be stellar for at least the foreseeable future love it

  4. He’s getting that much because he’d be signed like one of next years top SS not 2nd base. He was going to get paid big time by someone.

  5. This *should* put an end to the “cubs cheap” narrative – this is exactly what a good and big market team does. Drafts well, trades well, and locks those players up early. LOVE to see it

  6. I was close with my 6yr/$150mil guess, but I’ll be the first to say I went over and cannot win the Showcase.

  7. I love this move. Hoerner is the real catalyst for this team IMO. He’s that tough, scrappy player that every team wants. No hot dogging with him. While he’s no slugger, he’s the most dependable bat in the lineup. He usually puts the ball in play. Obviously, we all know of his great defense. I’d take a team full of Hoerners.

  8. Nicos girl was online at Chipotle getting them dinner when the news broke. He told her to “get the guac”

  9. I think this is good for Nico and good for the cubs.

There are certain players that are just cubs period.  Nico really is one of those guys.

Really happy for him and his family.

    Class act

  10. What’re the opt outs? The age 33 and 34 session could be rough. And yes I remember the Lester deal, just curious…
