Minnesota Vikings have needs to fill as NFL Draft approaches
The free agency portion of the Minnesota Vikings offseason is largely over. Now, we move onto phase two, the NFL Draft. The Minnesota Star Tribune’s Chip Scoggins joins Purple Daily’s Judd Zulgad, as the two dive deep into the Minnesota Vikings roster and what still needs to be done through the draft and the remainder of free agency. What positions on the roster are the most in need of upgrades? The boys also examine how a Kevin O’Connell Training Camp is constructed and attempt to project the week one QB depth chart.

So, we have 6 or 8 positions to fill and only 10 draft picks AND can't pick a starter when we have multiple 1st round picks, what could possibly go wrong this year 😮😂
Thank you for another enjoyable episode with Chip and Judd. Feels like two homies vibing every Saturday.
Draft needs D line D back R back safety Wide Receivers 😮
I don't see how this is complicated. They picked up a swing, tackle.Randal is the center. Why does no one understand this?
I love how we casually mention Kwesi when talking about failure in the draft. So the non scout Kwesi was deciding who we draft. It’s ludicrous to believe that. KOC now has cover and plausible deniability to act as if was just there. And let’s not get into our development process as Nashon Wright becomes a pro bowler and he couldn’t get off our practice squad. Ingram and Bradbury became serviceable AFTER they left us. We need lots of help and holding people accountable.
Luckily the BPA is very likely a position of need.
In my view the biggest areas of need in order are:
Safety
RB
DT
DT (we need two)
Center
LB
OT
Safety (we need two)
I hear that Max had a fantastic off-season
Kyler has the leg kicks and I never hear anyone talking about his mechanics.
WR3 and WR depth. What happens if Jefferson or Addison go down for a significant amount of time or god forbid both, Tai Felton and……who?
Bring Chip on for more segments!!!!
It's depressing, but Judd is absolutely right, we can't fix our depth/roster deficiencies in one draft/off-season….I like the way Rob Brzezinski is handling things….. My hope is we use our first few picks on premium positions (WR, CB, OT, EDGE) AND NOT on center/guard/RB/safety like so many people are mocking to us…. I think it would be a HUGE STEP in the right direction if we could just do simple smart things like this and make smarter investments
Anybody who thinks the Vikings have a snowballs chance in hell of competing for a SB is straight up fucking full on dlilusional!
31st in pressures allowed
WITH THIS ROSTER.
THESE GUYS.
We need a swing interior lineman and hopefully our signing of a free agent tackle filled that backup (swing) position.
And then there's center. Starting.
I pray the Vikings lose EVERY game this year! I've been a fan since the 70's and I can't take this pathetic loser franchise any fucking more!!!!!!!!! They have lost every year for 65 years and people still blindly support them no matter how in trenched in failure they become. At what point to Vikings fans stop letting this franchise play us for fools year after year after year?
I agree about RB
You can draft for depth because Coller says the draft is random. Funny Mr Purple Insider it isn’t random for the Lions, Rams, Eagles, or any team that wins regularly. If we drafted even close to 50% success last 4 years, we would be scary good
KOC’s offensive scheme brings heavy pressure. OL depth is the biggest threat for another down season. How do you try to remedy that? Draft OL, RB, and TE depth otherwise the Vikings will be burning 2027 picks during the season for rental players. Off ball linebacker desperately needs starting potential depth too. Lots more needs but at least there are bodies in the room to keep 11 players on the field at a time.
The wide receiver room is very thin. Jefferson and Addison are there sure, But after that it is really thin. They need a running back, DT, and seafety. They could use more corners as well and get a CENTER!!!
O'Connell's Achilles Heel as a quarterback was his mind.
He was tall, athletic, very quick and the all-time leader in rushing yards among USD quarterbacks.
Not even New England could develop him into an adequate backup NFL quarterback.
I want center or flexible tackle, rb, safety, dt cb, wr
Really getting irritating that signing kyler was a "all in" move. He was cheap and they needed upgrades in the qb room. Thats literally all. They can claim hes a long term solution all they want, if koc like a qb next draft, they will take one.
Running it back with an old roster, not addressing obvious needs, and bringing in a failed franchise quarterback to be our starter. This team won't get past the wild card, that's if they get to the playoffs.
Doogie should take notes from chip.
Jessie Pearce was so awesome she was one of a very special kind
Chip is right PD need to stop listening to Thor, every mock he sounds like Speilman trading back out of the first. Trading back for worthless picks and picking wrong is exactly how the Vikings got in the outrageous fix! You cannot fill every hole in one year.
Kyler Murray's best years is 26-12 8 fumbles 2 lost…and he was only sacked 27 times that year…the year before he was sacked 48 times…Kyler has never played a full season and he's never had a season of 30+ touchdowns and has always been projected or actually has thrown double digit interceptions…he's had maturity issues and has been known by the league of how to beat him…I hope I'm wrong 😂😂😂😂 but sadly I know I'm not…this will be prolly be KOC last year…they will probably start off fast and then the league will remember it's kyler Murray with KOC calling plays and an old ass running game…another 15-18 seed in the draft next year boys 😂…this sux
In football, any seriously weak link is exploited by other teams and must be addressed. We addressed one of our weakest links in free agency by bolstering the QB room. Safety needs to be addressed if Smith doesn’t return, however. And are we confident at run stopping and DT QB pressure? I’m thinking those 2 weak positions are addressed in rounds 1-4. Depth is necessary so no weak link is exposed throughout the season. Brandel can play center, but depth is a serious concern there. Line backer is thin, but starters are decent. Depth is addressed in rounds 4-7. WR3 needs some depth, but we may not even really need to worry about that in the draft, especially if we go with more heavy packages. Felton may be able to run 4 plays a week. After that, we want to produce mismatches. That’s rounds 1 and 2 generally. Where can we produce mismatches that are meaningful and haven’t already been addressed? Maybe RB.
Did KOC go to the Learing Center and realize that the best way to protect any QB is to RUN THE DAMN BALL ?!
Favorite part of my week
You are one injury away from having the worst WR room in the NFL.
The Vikes need to trade down. They have so many needs. Let Thor draft!
KOC is setting up an off-ramp to justify the Carson back up role. Doesn’t matter what JJ does, KOC’s a snake
My god, chip – did you prepare for this at all? Boring cast today ..
They are making JJ earn it. If he can't beat out those two chumps, he doesn't deserve to start.
This QB2-3 thing is so obnoxious. JJM played multiple games, he isn’t an unknown. Even if you make the wild assumption there is no improvement this off season he is still QB2.
Also this dumb ass QB coach stuff, he’s literally working with a widely respected QB coach that has worked with the best. I think Judds confusing his current QB coach with the Holcomb dude, get your info straight please.
9 picks
We need a top-notch Center!
Good grief, Judd. Chip perfectly explained the QB pecking order and why the Vikings signed Wentz to be the QB 3, yet you still don’t understand? Did you not see what happened last year when the team had to turn to Brosmer? Give it up, already. JJ is the number 2 and will play if/when Murray gets injured, and hopefully he’ll play well. If JJ then gets injured, which seems likely at this point, Wentz is a capable QB that can keep the team afloat. It’s not rocket science!
Safety even if Harrison Smith doesn't retire. WR3, center and A true RB, DT
Need to draft a center so they put Brandel back as another swing man. With the tackle they just signed and Brandel are good depth players for the Oline.
Center is a big deficiency but il be damn if we draft in a 1st round this class is solid we can get one with a 4th shaky on the 3rd but if it comrs down to it putting our hope in a rookie center is how we get f up
Vikings have 9 picks: 18, 49, 82, 97, 163, 196, 234, 235, 244
Maybe you guys should do your job and ask Kevin O'Connell what he thinks about JJ getting trained by a non -approved Vikings qb Coach. During training camp of course.
Justin jeffersons career is cooked with the Vikings. So is Darrisaw's, Oneils, hell maybe even addisons. What has History shown us. Give us some examples of when the vikings ownership with the Wilfs at the helm had EVERYBODY on the same page. Ownership, GM, Scouts, front office, Coaches, I'll wait..
There's always some Ego eccentric/ hot garbage coach or gm that gets butt hurt and sends the team into a spiral.
Ownership needs to man the F up, and start cracking skulls. This team is embarrassing.
