  1. To be fair, I think the Raptors taking Barnes 4th was largely against consensus, it’s not like only Magic fans had Suggs mocked fourth. It was a very Raptors-y pick to go against script and it, in typical Raptors fashion, has played out well.

That said, I quite like Suggs as a player. I think he can be a starting guard on a winning team, but his role is very clearly to be a defensive menace and setup the offence. He can’t score a lick. But could he have a career like Marcus Smart, or Alex Caruso? Absolutely. Those are great players. He just needs to be role guy, he’s not a starring guy. Maybe not what they wanted from a 5th pick, but he’s not a “bad player” IMO.

  2. It wasnt a crazy pick then and it obviously isn’t a crazy pick now.

Suggs went to Gonzaga and had the NCAA hype train behind him because he hit a game winning 3 in the tournament (banked in actually).

I didn’t know who Scottie Barnes was when we drafted him but I knew I didnt want Suggs because he couldn’t shoot.

It’s the same with CMB, didnt know who he was but sure as hell didnt want Maulauch because he didnt know how to play.

Not sure if CMB is going to turn into a home run like Scottie but the early returns are good.

  3. Man I miss Masai. I don’t think we’re going to be this good at drafting players for a while. He got us OG, Norm, Siakam, Freddy, Scottie, CMB, Jakobe, all players who if they were redrafted would easily go higher than where they were picked at (or from undrafted to drafted). Yes he a had a couple of misses but they were wayyyy fewer than our hits. I still believe our biggest mistake was firing him and this will bite us back in the future

  4. There’s also clips, tweets, Reddit comments of raps fans crying about the Barnes pick 😂, let the magic fans live 😂

  5. Good times. The draft experts in this sub were clowning Masai for not taking Suggs 😭😭

  6. I also wanted Suggs at the time, had a good March Madness run and I viewed him as the next franchise pg and Lowry replacement. Safe to say the front office made the right decision lmao.

  7. I’m honestly surprised people were so hyped to take Suggs from our fanbase and the fans in the video. He was such a jack of all trades player without being elite at anything, it was hard to see him being more than a good role player.

  8. I was ecstatic, I’ll always go with the 6’7-6’9 do it all player over the undersized not sure if I’m a pg/sg prospect especially while we still had undersized Guards

What’s worse this situation or magic trading a bag of 1st rd picks for the undersized Bane when they already had Suggs 🤣

  9. When we drafted Barnes it was as confused as when we drafted JV. Both are loved in my books now.

  10. Hollinger had Scottie no3 on his draft board in 2021 (and Sengun 4, btw) behind Cunningham and Mobley. This is how he opened his presentation on Barnes:

“I’m really surprised Barnes isn’t getting more buzz. He could easily end up as the best player in this draft and has a case for being the top pick.”
