[Chiefs] "Chiefs Kingdom, what were you like in the 90s?" Had to hop on the trend

  1. We weren’t good like we were now, but being a fan was a hell of a lot of fun back then.

  2. Need to include Gary Glitter, The Tony DiPardo Pack Band & KC Wolf running over interns in opposing jerseys on an ATV then you’ve fully nailed it.

Also that awful Astro turf they had in the early 90s

  3. Good memories. The last time I went to a game was in the 90s and they lost to the Steelers, but the environment was great. Couldn’t see since I was an eight yo kid and everyone was standing up most of the time lol. Think I end up cursing the home team if I show up to games though. Anytime I have been to a sporting event the home team has lost, so I stay away if I want them to win.

  4. Over the last decade the Chiefs have had more success than I could ever imagine, but the 90s era seems almost more special to me.

If I had a time machine and could use it to watch any Chiefs game in person throughout history, it’d be from the 90s. Probably the Joe Montana Monday Night game in Denver or that other Denver game where Elway threw a fit because it was too loud.

  5. Damn so I grew up near I-70 and Blue Ridge Blvd., a couple of times those giant A-10’s buzzed our house. They sound like jet engines strapped to an angry train, honestly a terrifying display of military power (and ego).

  6. Smashmouth football or Marty-Ball under Marty Schottenheimer. Has been 49er QBs (DeBerg, Bono, Montana, Grbac) with great defenses led by Neil Smith and Derrick Thomas. Perennial 10-6 or 11-5 type regular seasons with early playoff exits. But definitely a step up from the 1980s Chief teams who were usually 5-11 type teams.

  7. I went to pretty much every Chiefs home game from 87-95 and then left for college and moved to Chicago. I’ve only been to a handful of games since then, but I remember those weekends with my family very fondly. Those were amazing teams, amazing crowds, and we saw some of the best ever to play (and a lot of the best of the era) at Arrowhead. The Elway it’s too loud game, the Derrick Thomas 7 sack game, the Tamarack Vanover punt return in OT against the Chargers on Monday Night (it think it was OT?) game, the Huey Lewis “Home of the Chiefs” game, and the win bs the Steelers in the playoffs thanks to Montana and Nick Lowry are all personal favorites. Hell, I loved the strike year (80s not 90s but whatever) and seeing Jitter Fields return a punt for a TD. Tailgating in the parking lot, tossing the football in the lot (before the Chiefs banned that- did they ever unban it?), losing my voice screaming so much, and that dude a row in front of us who wore a blue pea coat to the games and spent a lot of the game yelling to his buddy “Schwarty” sitting a few rows behind us are all memories I’ll take with me to the grave.

They weren’t as good as they are now, though they were damn good for a lot of years. 95 was a killer though… Bono and the kicker who shall not be named. Ugh.

  8. Other than playoffs, the 90’s at Arrowhead were glorious! 2 lower level season tickets cost $500 bucks, No surcharge, that was 1990, had them ever since.

  9. Loyal as usual, but often frustrated. Always hopeful and faithful to this team. Go Chiefs!

  10. The 1990’s were incredibly special, even exceeding the great years we have had since #15 arrived. My family had season tickets throughout the 1970’s and 80’s and they were tough. Many times, especially late in the season, the stadium would be at half capacity or less. We just were not a very good franchise during this period.
Along came Petersen and Marty. Suddenly we were legit. By 1991, the Arrowhead Mystique was truly taking shape. The long suffereing fan base had something to cheer for, and it was like 20 years of pent-up energy was being released in the form of passion and BBQ smoke. Having sat through games where only 11k people showed up, 77k+ shouting until they were hoarse was something to behold. It was the right people, at the right time, in the right place. It was truly an experience.

  11. Lamar Hunt would be so disappointed about the move to Kansas 😭😭😭 yes I’m still hurt arrowhead is so beautiful

  12. My dad bought season tickets before the 1990 season. Section 301 right above the tunnel. Had those seats until 2003. I was 11 when he bought those. Saw every home game during that span. INCREDIBLE memories that I will always cherish. Have been back several times since (one-off games). Still a very special place, and even though the team is far better now, I still put those 90s games at the top. Probably just a nostalgia thing – not sure. We never did shit in the playoffs, but MAN – we thought every year was gonna be “the year.”

  13. I hated sports.  Football and baseball were the most boring shit in the world to me

Now i watch football all fall/winter and baseball all spring/summer

  14. This Chiefs team is better.

But that era’s fans were way louder and way less corporate. The Monday night game against Buffalo in the early 90s was utterly MENTAL.

And 90s Chiefs fans made Elway cry so much the refs had to plead with everyone to be nice.

Arrowhead was insane in the 90s in a way it can’t ever be again, sadly.

  15. Those were good times because I could finally see them on TV, and could order merch from Sears and JC Penney….
