Bruins Goalie Situation Just Got VERY Complicated…

Over the weekend, the Boston Bruins not only had back-to-back wins against the Wild and the Blue Jackets, but they also made a signing. The Bruins signed Max Lundgren to a one-year entry-level contract, which, if you look at the roster, has created a little bit of a log jam in net for the Bruins. In this video, I’m going to break down what I think the signing means for the Bruins now and in the future.

  1. Trade Korp for better defense than LOHREI who gets dominated by high school players. Bring up Deeep..slot open in Providence for the kid

  2. Great signing . Though I do question still next years back up. Keep in mind the schedule goes up to 84 games. Goalies rarely play over 60+ games now and I dont trust DiPietro to play 25+ games . Who knows with Korpi

  3. Having a great year, good pickup by Don!
Let the goalies play over the summer and determine their order in the organization themselves. Once that is clear, then Don has an easier choice to make.

  4. And we have Simon Zajicek, 18gp 2.34 gaa. .919 sv% 12-5-1. Looks solid. If the Bruins promote DiPietro we already have the pipeline pieces to support the move.

  5. This is where college players get a chance to prove themselves, I think him and Svedeback are going to compete for a roster spot in Providence I think Lungren will get that spot and Sevedback might have to play in Maine first which isn’t a bad thing. Look at Colton Ellis of Buffalo he played a good 3 years in the ECHL. He didn’t impress right off the bat but he developed and started in Springfield for a year and did a solid job for a not so solid team, St. Louis messed up and put him on waivers so Buffalo took the opportunity and got a really solid backup.

  6. Great info Court! I was at the BC vs Merrimack game, so I got to see him up close and everything you described was spot on. I think it's a strong signing by the Bruins. I do wonder if it means they don't have tons of faith in Simon Zajicek, but we shall see. Dipps size concerns me, but he has been fantastic in Providence. Working with Goalie Bob if he becomes the backup to Sway can only help his play.

  7. Court – I dont claim to know any of the guys in the minors, but I thought you had said consistently that DiPietro was not an NHL goalie? Did I get that wrong?

Obviously the team missed on Bussi

  8. What would be the plan for Zajicek? Would he just rotate with him in the ahl and dipetro plays back up to swayman and see if sweeny can fleece someone like dubas did with Jarry?

  9. In last year’s Dog days of summer, I said, if he can just string a decent season together just by looking at ESPN app goals against and goals save percentage and record that I can get the same out of one of these young Bucks moving forward and have 9 million tied up in goalie cap compared to the 11-12 mill I’ll take it and use that 3 mill towards shoring up other parts of the lineup I think u take that all day long.

  10. Its great for us but I'm tired of these huge goalies who cover the whole net . Why not find a pro wrester who's 6'11' ( or bigger ) and 400lbs and let him kneel down , he'll cover the whole net . lol

  11. I'm thinking Korpi is done. Buyout at worst next year. DiPierro up. Zijacek takes over Providence. Svedebeck and Lundgren compete for Providence back up, loser heads to Maine for a year. Pipeline is stocked.

  12. Yes, Yes, and 100% Yes.. Please Move Korpisalo in the offseason to a team that needs a Goalie. get some more depth or picks then rotate though. I don't want us to loose another Goalie like we did Bussi for a Older Goaltender to take a swing.

  13. The Bruins signed Lundgren because…

    Svedeback- Not an NHL goalie

    Zjack- Not an NHL goalie

Dipietro- Small by every NHL standard. Not the type of athlete or technical wizard a small guy like Soros in Nashville is

Dipietro's holes as a small goalie will likely be too big for him to ever even become a marginal backup in the NHL

Korpisalo has had a good enough second half of the season & there is ZERO chance Don Sweeney will prefer an unproven & likely not NHL caliber goalie in Michael Dipietro over Joonas Korpisalo next season as the Bruins backup, zero chance

Seems like Lundgren was signed first & foremost because Boston doesn't have a single sure fire, real future NHL starter or backup in goal beyomd Jeremy Swayman & Joonas Korpisalo in their entire organization

    Next year in Boston:

    Swayman
    Korpisalo

    Next year in PVD:

    Dipietro
    Lundgren

And it wouldn't come as any surprise if Boston drafted a goalie this year either as it was quite surprising that they didn't draft a goalie at last year's draft

But with Svedeback & Zjack not being future NHLers & with Dipietro likely being nothing but a career AHLer….

Boston has to start making some moves to acquire at lwast one or two potentially real, future NHL goalies

As again, as of right now, once you get past Swayman & Korpisalo you'd be hard pressed to find many that think Dipietro Zjack or even Lundgren represent a good goalie pipeline for Boston as the reality is even after signing Lundgren, the Bruins still have one of the NHL's weakest goalie prospect pools

Swaymsn may be the starter for another decade, who could fall of statististically, he could get injured

And… There is a derth of even marginally decent goaltemding in the NHL so if you draft & develop a quality netminder, that netminder & or your current NHL starter instantly become extremely valuable trade chips

This is why the Bruins probably rushed to sign Lundgren…

Their goalie pipeline simply isn't very strong today

  14. There was a terrific article in The Athletic today on the state of Goaltending. Great insight on how the older goalies have retired and a new group of have emerged. Teams are leery of signing long term deals as they have been burned by over reacting.

  15. Would be good to bring DiPietro up and move on from Korpisalo. As good as Korpisalo has been, it has been 12 wins on the year – Probably ending up with 13… DiPietro can likely hit 10 plus wins given some lower rank teams, and it seems Swayman can now start to handle more than a 50/50 or even 60/40 split… Which I did not believe a year ago.
I would hate to see the Bruins let another prospect walk and thrive on another team. Korpisalo I think is at his ceiling now… not sure with the younger goalies what the ceiling would be.

  16. Been waiting for this one, Court, great video. I saw the news last night during the game I'm just like man, I'm starting to wonder if the Bruins have a separate scout just for tendies, what a pickup… To add on to your comments, I think in the off season the Bruins are going to D up heavily, and it makes total sense to have 2 top tier RELIABLE goaltenders while the new younger defense gain some experience. Goaltending wins ships. Sure Korpisalo has improved since being in the Bs system, but he's still not reliable, just look at Sturm's decision to play Sway in back to back games when the points matter. I also think there are still some sour grapes on the management side with Korpi whining about playtime last season, you gotta earn it, kid. So yeah I think they offload Korp, bring up DiPietro as a backup and work with Lundgren in Providence. Zajicek is no slouch either at 12-5-1 / 2.34 / .919 but he also has had the advantage of a top tier offense this season in Providence, whom I believe a good portion will be with the big club next season.

  17. looks like edmonton is gonna do something desperate to get a proper goalie from us, wonder what theyd give for Swayman if the Bs find Dipietro strong enough to be number 1 next season. Not that I wanna part with Swayman honestly.

  18. I actually never heard of him, until the signing and NOW, after looking at him, I love the signing!
This puts another goalie in the line of succession

THAT is a good thing. IF (big if) the B's move on from Korpi, that means, maybe they move someone (DiPietro) from Providence to Boston. Korpi has been ok, of late. I worry, does he turn back into Korpi of the Fall? or, of early 2026? Also, he get's ONE year older. I know Goalies can be older and still good… but, I think maybe it IS TIME, to move on. If they do move on, that leaves a hole. AND, means a spot to move someone in. Maybe Lundgren?

  19. I will point out that it was you who pointed out that when DiPietro stepped in for Korpisalo for a few minutes he looked like a deer in the headlights.

  20. Ed Giacamon was my fave. I miss the stand up goalie, the butterfly style gives me fits. If Khustidinov and Minten could find the back of the net consistently, the B's would be quite a formidable team. You're on point, goalies are great investments especially in a watered down league, they have a lot of assets to build a solid defense and another sniper.
