Ryan Wood – A detailed explanation from Ed Policy on why he gave Matt LaFleur a “multi-year” contract that represented a “very significant commitment,” not a “prove-it” contract.

  1. Also from Ryan:

Asked Ed Policy if he was aware decision to extend Matt LaFleur was unpopular with significant portion of #Packers fan base, and whether fan sentiment factored into decision.

ETA: Ed Policy made clear he decided to extend Matt LaFleur before Packers played Bears in postseason: “All of the stories about coaching for his career, coaching for his life, there was no accuracy to that whatsoever. Certainly knew it well before that Chicago playoff game.”

  2. It has been explained in great detail in this sub that MLF is a head coach that cannot win, so by extension Ed Policy has to be a fool who cannot see what all of the brilliant football minds in this sub can see.

  3. He’s a teacher? He just admitted otherwise in his comments yesterday.
    Team supports him?
Received a bottom 5 grade from the players.

This seems like a lot of conflicting bullshit talk

    Said yesterday-
“LaFleur on finding ways to finish games: “That’s been on the forefront of my mind. It starts with a mentality, but it’s got to be in everything we do.” Added that “there’s going to be a start and finish to every drill.”

WTF Finish to every drill? What are we doing here.

  4. People like to have multiple reasons for their decisions. Another reason, hinted at here but unspoken, is how Love would perform in a new system. Love himself said as much.

  5. He may be good at developing quarterbacks….but what about the rest of the god damn team? Sounds more like a quarterbacks coach then a head coach.

  6. Not a great start to the Policy regime. All this means is we’re going to hold onto MLF way too long.

  7. The winningest coach stuff is such BS when most of it is bloated by Rodgers years and we continually fell short in the playoffs anyways.

MLF has done a great job with QBs and the offense but he’s the head coach not OC or QB coach. He’s responsible for the entire team. When the entire team continues to fall short and it’s for the same issues, coaching has to be looked at. But the fanbase will keep using weak excuses like the youngest team.

Policy looks to be content being just good enough to continue filling the bleachers. Can’t wait for another WC exit.

  8. It’s really funny hearing so many people in this organization go on and on about “accountability” (my new favorite PR buzzword) and how much it matters, only for it to mean nothing at the end of the day.

  9. This is why I love the packers, we are not an impulsive emotional team run by armchair qbs

  10. Bilichick was fired by the browns after a 36-44 record when he was about the same age Lefleur is now. Lefleur is 76-40 with the packers. A bad end to the season doesn’t predict the future folks.

  11. Extend it all the way back to Matt Ryan winning MVP with Lafleur as his QB coach. Lafleurs track record with QBs is incredible.

  12. winningest regular season record, maybe. his playoff record is plain terrible, considering the talent we have. stop blaming injuries. we blew a HUGE lead and he got OUTCOACHED. But hey, at least the rivalry is back

  13. I can see it both ways. Policy isn’t wrong. And Lafleur has some serious weaknesses. Hopefully this is the year he figures it out.

We really just need to stay healthy.

  14. “These are not decisions that should be made by fans after a very disappointing loss.” – fucking preach

  15. I anticipate reading the well informed deeply thoughtful and nuanced opinions that only a thread like this can provide me.

  16. LaFleur got the very best out of Aaron?

I didn’t know he was on the team when Aaron won his super bowl…

  17. Doesn’t this contradict the report from a few days ago saying many players were upset with him over their role within the team? The end of year player’s report also gave him a B-

  18. MFL has put us in positions to win games more often than not. At some point you need to rely on your players, and that seems to be where most of the friction stems from. Are we talking about MFL being fired if Doubs catches the onside kick or if Jordan Love scorea a TD in the final minute?

I get he’s the current scapegoat, but I sincerely appreciate the way Ed Policy is handling the situation.

  19. I want to have hope as a packers fan. I feel we are so screwed with little Matt and president has no pulse of the team

  20. Why would he care.  The money is a drop in the bucket for the team and if it doesn’t work out there is no cap hit to fire MLF.

This is just a puff piece.  This team needs to start winning playoff games.

  21. I always said this; MLF tenure lines up with Micah and Jordan’s extensions. They need to get it done within that window, our season effectively ended in Denver when we lost not just Micah, but Zach Tom.

The collapse against the Bears is terrible, but the team was already reeling due to the injuries.

The only thing I’ll say, dire Butkus please. Why is he still our OL coach.

  22. I haven’t seen much from Ed Policy, but what I have seen I dislike. This response in particular is just dumb. His reasoning for extending our HC is because he’s a good QB coach??

  23. I hope fans don’t give MLF a free ride just because he’s good… Or that they hate people who point out the bad.

There are too many instances of him being unable, or unwilling to address core issues inside of his team. Maybe he can fix them, but other than quarterback development, what is that track record?

I’m not saying a bad coach, but if they fail to when multiple games in the playoffs this year, I think it’s very fair to question his long-term viability with the team.

There is way more evidence that there are issues inside of the locker room, inside of his staff (stale and a lack of accountability), putting players in a position to develop and succeed, suspect hiring (other than one D coordinator, etc… then there is evidence that he is capable of winning a championship.

  24. Bad organizations react hastily and emotionally when things don’t go their way.

Kinda sad to see some people in this sub cry for change even though we have had great success. Good things come to those who wait.

  25. The NFLPA survey certainly wasn’t an endorsement of the Offense from the players.

  26. Gonna be fun to revisit this when we miss the playoffs this year. It’s funny how 3 straight 7 seeds and one playoff win in 5 years is good enough for the front office

  27. Can’t flake out when the games matter, I’ll give last year a mulligan with injuries but there is a pattern
