I really don’t want to hear anything more from the sycophant Yzerbots about how individuals who are upset with the results of this rebuild are somehow not real fans for expressing their frustration.
This team is in an absolute nightmare spot moving forward.

I haven’t watched a game since the 3rd period collapse vs Flordia. Happy to not have waisted my evenings getting upset, but it really stings. Thought this season would be different. Thought this group would have learned from past mistakes. Thought the additions of veterans would change things. Now all I can think about is how we traded an unprotected first round pick for another shitty March.

Definitely feels like Festivus on here today. I guess it just makes sense to do the airing of grievances after the last two months the team has had.
The dumpster fire of it all isn’t so much that we are really bad, but that we’re so so so so close. Again. We’d have a handful more points this year and be in the playoffs if we had better performances from 4 or 5 guys who aren’t our top performers. Imagine if Kasper was putting up 25 like we hoped, or if Danielson and Mazur were healthy, or if Rasmussen didn’t peak 5 years ago, maybe ASP was a little bit more ready. Its just tiny little things, plus missed opportunities that we should have won but cant anymore.

There’s been a lot of discussion about the holes in this team (and therefore the future) and I think the issue with this team is blatantly obvious and it’s not the top line.
Here are a specific few teams top 5 players in scoring:
Detroit: 307 points in 346 games for .879 ppg
Montreal: 378 points in 369* games for 1.02 ppg
Ottawa: 291 points in 335 games for .869 ppg
Buffalo: 271 points in 311 games for .871 ppg
*(as an aside, don’t buy into Montreal’s “oh we’re so injured” propaganda. Their top 9 scorers have missed a collective 6 games this season and Caufield’s single game of illness is the lone absence in the top 7)
Our issue is not with top end talent. Of course, more top end talent (cap implications aside) can’t hurt, but the top end is not what’s holding this team back.
Let’s check the bottom 3 “full-time” forwards on each team:
Detroit (Appleton-Rasmussen-Kasper): 0.227
Montreal (Veleno-Gallagher-Anderson): 0.249
Ottawa (Eller – Cousins – Zetterlund): 0.299
Buffalo (Malenstyn-Ostlund-Kozak)**: 0.251
**could be significantly worse (0.148) if you use Greenway instead of Ostlund, who has had significant opportunity higher in the lineup in Norris’s prolonged absence.
So our bottom is the worst of the four (except maybe Buffalo) but probably not in a season-altering manner.
The problem is the middle 6. I’ll take the middle 4 forwards from each team to avoid overlap with the bottom 3 or the top 5.
Detroit: 0.42
Montreal: 0.45
Ottawa: 0.54
Buffalo: 0.678 (Buffalo’s numbers are weird because Norris has missed like half the season, which really boosts McLeod’s numbers).
And, in my opinion, that’s exactly what we have a wealth of potential hits for in the pipeline. MBN is big and physical and seems to have found his scoring touch in the AHL. Genborg is the same archetype. Bear is gritty and has a nose for the net. Finnie is 2 goals away from having more goals this season than he had *games of professional experience* coming into training camp. Danielson is a great playmaker with a solid defensive game. Plante was absolutely phenomenal for Duluth this season.
This is also a slightly more full FA pool than “top end talent” which is basically just Tuch. But guys like Charlie Coyle, Marcus Johansson, Eeli Tolvanen, and Bobby McMann could all be the type of player we need. This archetype is also easier to trade for than top line talent and requires fewer, if any, premium assets.
None of those guys need to be superstars. We just need 1 or 2 of them to be ~60 point guys and 1 or 2 of them to be more than just jerseys.
I miss ASP. At least he could transition pucks up the ice and keep plays alive in the opposing zone. Which is exactly what we can’t do lately
If we’re keeping JBD in because it makes us slightly better defensively or whatever I don’t get it because it’s not like we’ve been shutting teams down at all
