In this video we take a deep dive of the Detroit Red Wings and how they may continue to own the longest playoff drought in the NHL

  1. Detroit is stuck in that low orbit of not good enough but not bad enough either. Seider is a stud and Debrincat is elite but otherwise they lack high end offensive talent. Larkin is a very good player but would be the 2C on any of the elite teams in the league. They need a superstar but they aren't bad enough to draft one

  2. Red Wing management tried to go in two directions at the same time. They signed vets UFA to be competitive now, but traded mid 20s guys at the same time. They could have Hronek, Seider, Walman, Faulk, Edvinsson and Docker for 27.4M$ instead of what they have for 22.7M$ if their goal was to be good now. OR they could have not signed Chiarot, Copp, Compher, sold in 2022 and maybe they would now have guys like Gauthier, and Smith instead of Kasper and Danielsson.

  3. The Penguins were playing a back to back and outskated a rested Red Wings team. Not too difficult to see what the problem is. Slow like the Rangers. Duh.

  4. 6:59 @hockeypsychology where did you find these stats? Is it possible to make a video on this stat alone showing players with high success rates, what the do right, what others do wrong?

  5. It’s kind of a chicken or the egg thing but the another big reason that Detroit has issues exiting the zone is that they don’t have fast forwards to create space and drive the play

  6. The Redwings neutral zone play (defense and offense) and breakout from the D-zone is horrible. It’s why they struggle to score 5 on 5 goals. I think it’s a coaching issue more than a personnel issue. That and the Wings lack depth past the top 6. It may not win a cup but even if they fixed the depth issue, they would stop letting me down as bad every year.

  7. Do you have a link for advanced hockey stats? Wings fan here, I'd like to see how other teams stack up for Exit Success Rate up and down the lineup. We're pitiful at breakouts.

  8. I’ve been a hardcore wings fan for 20 years (I’m 32, and they’ve been the only team I cheer for in my favourite sport). It’s frustrating and depressing this year for sure. I watch the games, but can’t even bring myself to look at the standings. The collapse is happening again and just like a train wreck, I don’t want to watch but I can’t look away.

I gotta say though, I can’t really blame Yzerman or McLennan for this. Yzerman was handed a terrible situation and hes done really well. I’m confident he can take us all the way still. Would it be nice if it moved a bit faster? Of course, but the team still has a solid future as a bubble playoff team for years now. They will break through.

McLennan is definitely the best coach in the Yzerman era and it’s been so refreshing having him lead this team the last 1.5 years.

I’m down to run this same group back next year before conducting major surgery to the team, the staff, or the management

  9. 2 years ago it was fkn Torts who gave the decrepit Washington war propaganda cretins a play-offs spot on a silver platter, this year they can handle missing it all by themselves.
