‪Get this guy on the O-line!‬

  1. This guy would be bbq chicken on an o line where defensive players can go around him. It’s the size+strength+lateral movement athleticism that makes NFL linemen unique

  2. Let see him.do this on grass with cleats. The floors are designed to hold position, not move forward

  3. The goal of sumo wrestling is different. Parsons is attempting to push him out of the circle, not get around him. Also, the sumo wrestler here is just trying to hold his ground and not be moved. If you put him and parsons on a football field and told him to not let parsons get past him, it would be a much different result

  4. I mean, it’s certainly impressive that he can stop him straight on. I imagine Micah could get around him though.

  5. I don’t know if sumo wrestlers have the endurance training for the amount of snaps per game

  6. Micah is a freak so I’m sure he’d get around him on the field but people are underestimating the lateral quickness of some sumo wrestlers

  7. Now that parsons use the moves he uses in the NFL. That would be great if the object was to move them straight backwards in the NFL but the object is to get around them.

  8. I actually think it’s possible. Stephen Neal didn’t play college football. He was a division 1 wrestling champion. He gave us 10 years of great guard play. I think at guard, a sumo wrestler might be quite fearsome.

  9. Yeah but what happens when the sumo wrestler has to move laterally. Pass rushers don’t just bull rush linemen.

  10. If football was played in a small circle, and the only goal was to push the person across from you, absolutely.

But as football is not bound by such constraints, need a little bit more than just being good at Sumo wrestling to achieve in the NFL.

  11. Except Micah is going at him directly for sumo purposes. In the NFL he’d just move around him.

  12. Yeah you couldn’t take a top sumo and just place him on the oline but I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone from the sport have success in the nfl if they trained. The top sumo wrestlers are super athletic and freaks of nature. Onosato is 6’4″, 405 lbs, and fast. You’d somehow have to convince them to leave sumo at their peak though which I don’t see happening.

  13. I’ve actually wondered why some of these sumo guys can’t play on the O line. They’re crazy agile in spite of their size. Maybe they’d suck at run blocking, but I have to believe they’d be good pass blockers.

  14. elite athletes in every sport optimize their physiques to that sport. a sumo wrestler is gonna out-sumo a football player, a football player is gonna smoke a sumo wrestler in live snaps

  15. If memory serves Al Davis tried that and found them unable to repeat blocks consistently over long periods of time. Sumo wrestlers are built for instant power and not sustained, repetitive blocking.

  16. Sumo depends a lot on HOLDING. Which is a foul lol.

But should nfl OL work with sumo wrestlers in the off season? Sure!

  17. Maybe not sumo wrestlers, but some sumo training would probably be beneficial. Their legs are like trees.

  18. This reminds of when my hs coach did a drill like this to determine the starting o line one week. They ended up setting a state record for sacks allowed in a half. Nothing about this translates on the field .

  19. This was a plotline in the Keanu Reeves football movie from a long time ago.

  20. Yes because quite often Micah Parsons just lines up across from an O lineman, engages shoulders, and gets into a shoving match.

Any decent edge would swim or rip the fuck out of these sumo guys with very little resistance.

  21. They can but bro is going to get flag for holding 90% of the time. Unless they train sumo wrestlers not hold which is 99% of their techniques

  22. Maybe a Guard if they work hard enough, but never a Center or Tackle.

Tackles require lots of lateral movement

Center requires to snap a ball with 100% efficiency.

  23. I went down a rabbit hole on this after a Japan trip. The TL/DR version is sumo wrestlers don’t have the stamina to play NFL, sumo rounds are very short, also they can get more money and loads more fame in Sumo.
