Dallas Cowboys Receive MORE Evidence Of Caleb Downs Sliding To Them In The 2026 NFL Draft

Caleb Downs to the Cowboys just got even more evidence! Dallas Cowboys rumors today come from The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, who thinks the Cowboys have a real shot at landing the Ohio State defensive back at #12 overall. It’s not a guarantee, but Cowboys Report host Tom Downey looks at the path for Caleb Downs to the Cowboys in the 2026 NFL Draft and admits he’s getting a little high on hopium.

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler is among the NFL Draft insiders who aren’t ruling out Caleb Downs to the Cowboys: “He’s a wild card top 15 pick. He could go #5 to the giants and wouldn’t bat an eye. He could #12 to the Cowboys and wouldn’t bat an eye. I don’t think either of those 2 would be surprising. It’s hard cause there’s a lot of teams that won’t draft a safety. It has nothing to do with that he didn’t test. Teams just don’t draft safeties that early. The Bengals traditionally have been one of those teams. The Bengals are a really interesting spot. They could obviously use a player like that, they could use a player like that on their time. But would they go against type? Usually, they’re not a team that does. They’ve got very strict parameters by their draft history. And so, there’s a couple of teams like that. I’m really interested to see would Caleb Downs get past a couple of those teams. The Bengals at #10, the Cowboys at #12 are one of them. I think he’s gonna go Top 15, it’s a matter of where. Like I said, he’s a wild card. If he’s still there at 12, I don’t think that means he’s falling. It was always this way: he’s just a wild card. He’s not going to be for everybody because of how some teams philosophically view the position.”

  1. The real question is: Realistically, how far down does Downs have to fall to get into the ‘Trade up’ category? Would we wait the full 12? I love this time of year!!

  2. Downs would be a gift from the football gods. If we get him and then Messidore or CJ Allen at 20 (or lower) it's an A+ draft. But if Downs and all the best defensive players are gone there will be an elite OL or WR there for us. If we get a WR at 12 then trade Pickens ans save a ton of cap space to finish out the defense next year.

Here's the nightmare scenario and what we oftten get from the Cowboys. Pick 12 rolls up and Dallas . . . takes somebody else or trades down. Instant rage hate for Jerry ensues.

  3. Frankly, if all defensive prospects are gone by pick #12 they should simply move on. Also, they should trade Pickens N-O-W [before the draft] for a 1st + a 2nd round pick for the all-pro Pickens cuz he's not going to play under the tag.

    So-o-o…

    No. No. Hell…no!

Salivating over a safety is laughable when so many other talented players are available at critical positions in a draft that is absolutely loaded at the Cowboy's positions of need:

    DE
    LB
    CB

…and possibly OT as well also + [if Pickens is a problem] WR & RB to replace Terrence Steele and light a fire under our underwhelming left OT.

    Thus,

They should strongly consider moving down with both picks to obtain more picks on day 2. Frankly, they can easily drop 4 or 5 spots to pick up a #2 for their 12th pick then drop from the 20th pick to say the Texan's 28th pick of the 1st round plus one of their two 2nd rounders.

Then, I would pick an Edge rusher like Ruben Bain at #16 and a WR at #20 like Cornell Tate. I would take LB Anthony Hill & possibly another CB in round 2…then use the 3rd round picks on:

    3.) Jonah Coleman RB
    3.) Deonté Lawson LB
    4.) Derrick Moore 6'3" 260lb DE
    5.) Dominique Orange DT 6'3" 325lb
    5.) Jeff Caldwell 6'5" 216lb WR with
    4.31 speed in the 40.
    5.) Chris Johnson CB 6'0" 190lb
    6.) Zachariah Branch 5'10" 180lb WR
    PR/KR with 4.3 speed.

T-H-I-S will do away with the need for a viable #2 while providing the needed Frontline infusion of talent at DE & LB. Also, I think a 2-headed running back tandem is better for all concerned. This could evolve into a top 10 defense by midseason and top 5 by years end. I pray JJ is not stupid enough to waste a premium pick on a safety.

  4. WHAT IF…Drafting a Big NT is a priority early?
Yes, they brought in Ogbonnia on a one year deal to play NT, and have Toia. And yes Clark and Williams can play NT. But, they're going to play DE mostly.
    So, WHAT IF???
WHAT IF, they drafted a BIG NT high with #20? I'm specifically thinking of McDonald! That gives you 3 elite big men in the middle up front. Plus Gary, on the edge, and I'm not ashamed of Sam Williams, Ezeiruaku, or James Houston on the other side.
    SO WHAT IF???

  5. Downs is 6’0 most likely a 4.5 guy. That’s not the type of safety that you draft top 5 in today’s league. You can easily draft really good to elite level safety play in the later first and second round. So to draft downs that early, you have to believe he’s a hall of fame level player in this draft because safety is over the top deep in this draft.

  6. I don't see a world where the Giants, Dolphins, Cheifs, Bengals, and Commanders all don't have Downes at the top of their boards. I know not all teams are great at drafting but he's considered one of the top 5 players. I'm not buying it… wish this was the case.
