Michael Brennan went all in on a swamp shot in New Orleans on Thursday — with suboptimal results.
In the first round of the Zurich Classic, Brennan sent a ball into the water on No. 18, halfway through his round after starting on the back nine. He then attempted to salvage the shot by braving the mud, taking off his shirt first.
The resulting shot was not quite worth all of that effort. Brennan tried to cut the ball up out of the water, but it flew a couple feet in the air — spraying water and debris on Brennan — before it fell right back in.
Luckily for Brennan, the Zurich Classic is a team event. Brennan’s partner, Johnny Keefer, made par on the hole, meaning that they could take Keefer’s score rather than Brennan’s in the four-ball format.
Brennan and Keefer finished their round at 11-under par, tied for fourth place and three shots behind the leading team of Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer. The duo delivered an eagle apiece to hit the mark, with Brennan contributing four birdies to their team score and Keefer carding three of his own.
