Uncrowned has UFC 328 live results, round-by-round updates, highlights and start time for the Khamzat Chimaev vs. Sean Strickland fight card on Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. In a heated grudge match, UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev makes the first defense of his belt against former champion Sean Strickland in the night’s five-round main event. Flyweight champion Joshua Van puts his title on the line against Tatsuro Taira in the evening’s co-headliner.
Chimaev (15-0) vs. Strickland (30-7) has had quite the eventful lead-up. The two middleweights have been at odds since their relationship turned soured following a brief stretch as sparring partners at Las Vegas’ Xtreme Couture gym. That animosity has ratcheted up tenfold since UFC 328’s headliner was booked, leading to Chimaev kicking Strickland this week following a fiery, expletive-laden pre-fight press conference.

Chimaev, 32, is Uncrowned’s No. 3 pound-for-pound fighter and one of the most dominant fighters in the sport. A terrifying pace-setter with perhaps the best wrestling in the 185-pound division, “The Wolf” has won all nine of his UFC appearances across two weight classes, culminating in his dominant title win over Dricus du Plessis in August.
Strickland, 35, lost his UFC middleweight title to du Plessis in 2025 but rebounded this past February with a third-round stoppage of Anthony Hernandez.
In the co-headliner, Van (16-2) and Taira (18-1) are set to make history as the first UFC title bout contested between two Asian male fighters, as well as the title bout with the youngest combined age between both competitors; Van is 24, while Taira is 26.

Chimaev lands a one-two to start the middle frame. He jabs and presses, eating one in return. Strickland keeps them coming. A hard body shot lands for the champ. Another lands. They trade jabs. Chimaev continues to walk down Strickland patiently. It’s largely a jab fest until Strickland fires off the right hook. Chimaev sneaks one of his own into the guard. They each land jabs. Strickland catches Chimaev with a nice right hook again. Chimaev hasn’t teased a single takedown in this round, but continues to walk at the challenger. He finds the jab. Strickland’s nose is starting to bleed as Chimaev lands his jab and right. The Chimaev jab is really connecting now. Chimaev continues to look for a big right hand. He lands to the back, which briefly off-balances Strickland. Strickland teeps, and the round ends without a single takedown attempt. Very close round.

Strickland starts by popping the jab before Chimaev lands a right. They exchange jabs and then swing upstairs. Chimaev jabs the body, then takes a shovel hook. Chimaev lands over the top. Strickland starts to find his jab in rhythm. Another Chimaev shot comes, but Strickland defends and takes top control! They’re in guard. Short punches land for each before Chimaev starts to kick Strickland off, and they stand. Strickland lands a right, and Chimaev fails another takedown! He goes to his back! He might be gassed already. This is a scene. Strickland is on top in side control. Not much action happening, but Strickland is stunningly in control. He maintains position until the round time expires.

Oh, boy. Here we go, folks. Chimaev kicks to the body early, then shoots in right for the easy takedown. Like clockwork. Strickland defends against the wall, doing his best to walk but gives up his back. Chimaev has a comfortable body lock, moving his prey around the cage before getting his hooks in. Strickland allows the transition, getting to his knees. Chimaev remains heavy, holding around the waist. Chimaev jumps back on the back and stretches Strickland out. Three minutes to work. Chimaev tries to open up Strickland’s neck. They’re hand-fighting. A scramble leads to Chimaev flowing back around Strickland. He’s just in control mode now. Chimaev stays tight to Strickland’s back. He’s just rolling with Strickland everywhere they go. Now he’s in mount. A triangle was briefly teased until they work back up. Chimaev slams him down and goes to the back. Chimaev goes for a late face crank! Strickland defends, and time expires.

Chimaev has fallen into “love-or-hate” territory after his dominant title fight effort against Dricus du Plessis. Regardless of whether you found the performance to be entertaining, the man remains one of the most impressive dominators MMA has ever seen.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way: There is clear bad blood here, and that seems like a bigger point of contention on Strickland’s end. We’ve seen him flounder or flourish when getting emotional before fights — his encounters with Israel Adesanya and du Plessis come to mind. Strickland’s jab-teep-heavy style never wavers much, unless you back down and allow him to dictate the pace firmly.
Unfortunately for him, Chimaev allows no one to do that.
Chimaev is the pressure. While Strickland has strong takedown defense, having stuffed 76% of his career attempts in the UFC, Chimaev has proven to be a one-of-a-kind mauler. And if MMA math says anything to you, du Plessis took Strickland down seven times across their two fights; Chimaev took du Plessis down 12 times in 25 minutes.
Now, I’m not an MMA math guy, so I don’t put much stock into it in the traditional sense. But du Plessis’ grappling success is telling. Strickland really hasn’t fought many aggressive grapplers at middleweight — like, at all. Even in his stellar win over Anthony Hernandez, Hernandez stunningly avoided his usual grappling approach, which cost him the fight.
Regardless, Chimaev is in his own category. From what I’ve heard about their training sessions at Xtreme Couture, Strickland bested Chimaev down the stretch. But how much stock can be put into anything that happens in the training room? We’ve heard those stories time and time again, and both men have had plenty of time to adjust since.
Either way, Chimaev can’t be bet against until he faces serious adversity, and Strickland traditionally doesn’t possess a lethal enough style to cause an epic stoppage. Making Chimaev angry and fired up may not play into the challenger’s favor in any way he hoped.

Taira starts unleashing a combo at the champ. He goes for another takedown. It’s stuffed. Van rips the body. Oh! The uppercuts! A hook! Van finishes it! Taira goes down! Wild, wild fight.

Taira starts to rattle off a big combo out the gate! Van fires back before he’s taken down again! Unreal. Van gets back to butterfly guard. He has been much more focused on control over ground-and-pound. Taira gets back to mount. Van goes to turn to his belly, but Taira stops it. He might have wanted to let him turn and work from behind. Van scrambles up and out, allowing for a Taira triangle choke! He slips off, and they stand! It’s a jab-off! A big pair of rights land for Van! His jab remains money. Taira goes to a calf kick, seemingly out of nowhere. Taira dives in for another takedown, which Van defends with a knee, while he fends him off on the cage. Sheesh. Time expires and we go to the final round.
