Indiana has landed a commitment from four-star Michigan prospect Myles Smith. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Edge from Farmington (MI) H.S. pledged to the Hoosiers during a ceremony at his high school over offers from Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Arizona State, California, Cincinnati, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, and Eastern Michigan.
Smith was in Bloomington earlier this month for his official visit at Indiana. He told Peegs.com following that trip how much the visit gave him the opportunity to learn more about the football program.
“This visit was different because I got to really spend time around everybody for the whole weekend,” Smith said. “It gave me a better feel for the culture.”
The visit to IU also allowed Smith to learn more about the defensive scheme and how the coaches see him fitting in on the defensive line.
“It was good spending time with the coaches,” Smith said. “I don’t feel like they were selling a dream, it was more direct and transparent, and I respect that. Coach (Curt) Cignetti, Coach Buddha (Williams), and Coach (Bryant) Haines shared the vision they have for me in their defense. I like it and I can see it. They play fast and relentless, which is my style of play. I can see myself playing as a stud or field edge in their defense.”
On the visit Smith said the Indiana players he was with talked to him about the standard that is expected from the coaching staff.
“The players mostly talked about the culture of the program and what it’s like being at IU,” he said about the message from the players. “They said the coaches push them hard, but they also care about them outside of football. They were real about the work that gets put in, but they also talked about how much they like being there and competing as a team.”
Smith is a four-star recruit according to the 247Sports composite rankings that is ranked the seventh best player in Michigan and the number 23 edge in the country. This past fall he recorded 85 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, six sacks, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one pass break-up.
