As much as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander needed to show up in Game 7 if the OKC Thunder were to reach the NBA Finals and defend their championship, the supporting cast needed a collective effort to beat the mighty San Antonio Spurs, especially with Ajay Mitchell and Jalen Williams being sidelined.

However, several Thunder players failed to show up, clearly showing that the bright lights of Game 7 got to them.

Their lack of impact frustrated Gilbert Arenas so much that he urged the two-time MVP SGA to demand his gifted, luxurious Audemars Piguet watches back from the culprits for underperforming and leaving him stranded on the court.

“Hey, Shai? When you get to the locker room, demand them all the APs, take them back. They didn’t show up. None of them. Wallace? Keep yours. J-Williams? Keep yours. Caruso? Keep yours. McCain? Keep yours. Everybody else, get that s—t back,” Arenas said on his stream. “Wallace, you take Chet’s. You get two of ’em. It’s crazy. This is Game 7!”

Thunder’s supporting cast fails in Game 7

Through the first six games of the WCFs, it became apparent that if the Thunder intend to win, Shai needs to match 7’4″ phenom Victor Wembanyama as the best player on the floor. And the Canadian superstar did exactly that on Saturday night.

He finished with a game-high 35 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field, along with dishing out nine assists. Yet, in a contest that saw Thunder overcome a 14-point first-half deficit at Paycom Center and lead by as many as four points, they eventually lost the contest 111-103.

The difference came from other sources. Isaiah Hartenstein and Lu Dort, for instance, scored a combined 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field and finished with a combined plus/minus rating of -23.

The most atrocious performance, though, came from Chet Holmgren. Let alone showing that he was an All-NBA Third Team selectee, the Gonzaga stud looked scared to impose his presence, having more turnovers (2) and field goals made (1). Moreover, it wasn’t like Holmgren tried his best; in fact, he shot two attempts from the field in 33 minutes, including none in the second half.

On the other hand, Jared McCain, Alex Caruso and Jaylin Williams combined for 35 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists. Even Cason Wallace, who started the game, scored 17 points (with five three-pointers) – including 14 of the team’s 26 points in the fourth quarter.

Role players were the difference makers

The San Antonio Spurs, on the other hand, received contributions from multiple players beyond Wemby.

While the youngest DPOY ever finished with 22 points, Julian Champagnie, Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox combined for 51 points, carrying much of the offensive burden. In addition, Keldon Johnson and Dylan Harper, off the bench, combined for 23 points while shooting 4-of-8 from the three-point range.

In the end, this series and, more importantly, Game 7 show that even when a guy like SGA performs at his best, unless the rest of the players feed off his energy and help elevate the team’s winning prowess together, the team isn’t likely to win high-stakes contests.
