Golfers looking to get one last swing in at Michigan’s Cattails Golf Club just outside Detroit better hurry.
The golf course that opened 35 years ago at 57737 Nine Mile Road in Lyon Township is closing for good, perhaps as early as June 8, to make way for a housing development.
“Get in for a round by Sunday, if you wait until Monday, it might be too late,” Cattails owner Tony Moscone said. “If you are considering Cattails, the course is staying open week to week, but depending on weather, the closing might be sooner rather than later.”
Rain isn’t usually a welcome forecast for golfers, but in this case, it might extend the life of Cattails. Moscone has not turned the water on this year at the course he and his family opened in 1991, anticipating the closure ahead of housing construction.
On June 1, the Lyon Township Board unanimously approved the first reading of a final plan for Cattails Preserve, which will put 127 homes on the 160-acre golf course property.
The plan calls for 67 acres, or about 41% of the site, to be preserved as open space, including 33 acres of wetlands and 22 acres of woodlands. Nearly all of the homes in the development will abut open space.

Five miles of continuous pathways will wind through the site, including the existing golf cart pathway, which will be repaved. The plan also calls for paving about a half-mile of 9 Mile Road.
Planner Brian Keesey noted the Cattails project had been in the works since December 2022, and there were no concerns with the final plan, which only requires a second reading in July to move forward.
Joe Skore of Pulte Homes said construction would start this year, with a second phase most likely in 2027.
Cattails isn’t the only golf course set to become a housing development in Lyon Township. Settler’s Ridge, a 283-home development, is planned to go on the 202 acres currently occupied by the Coyote Golf Club at the northeast corner of Milford and 12 Mile roads sometime after the end of the 2027 season.
