KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – England’s national soccer team landed in Kansas City over the weekend after a cross-country journey that was overshadowed by the theft of team equipment.
The squad touched down at Wheeler Downtown Airport around 12:20 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, arriving on a flight that departed Palm Beach International Airport at approximately 10:45 a.m.
The team is then expected to begin training at Swope Soccer Village later in the day.
England arrived in the United States on June 1, landing in West Palm Beach from Birmingham, U.K., where they had been conducting their pre-tournament training camp ahead of the World Cup.
But the team’s arrival in Kansas City comes with a cloud hanging over it.
Team officials confirmed to KCTV5 on Friday that vehicles transporting team gear had been stolen at some point during their trip from Florida to Kansas City.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas described the incident as a “heist.”
“Yesterday, officials in Kansas City learned that at some point between their over-the-road transport from Florida to their arrival at the training facility in Kansas City, goods belonging to the English National Team were stolen from the team’s transport vehicle. Public safety officials at the local, state, and federal levels are working to trace where in the United States the items were seized and all individuals who may have been involved. Further information will be provided by authorities at a later time.”
Local, state and federal authorities are now involved in the investigation. No additional details about what was stolen or any suspects have been released.
