TULSA — It’s a franchise record Monterey Bay FC would like to dissolve. Two different coaches have yet to solve what is closing in on a United Soccer League Championship record for futility.

The dark cloud that has hung over the Union for road games over the last 14 months continued after Wednesday’s 2-0 loss at FC Tulsa, stretching their road winless streak to 16 matches.

The setback also snapped what had been the USL’s longest current winning streak at three, keeping the Union at the bottom of the Western Conference standings with 11 points at 3-8-2.

The last time Monterey Bay FC won a road match was against Orange County, a 3-0 decision back in April of 2025. That was bus ride. The last time it won a road game by flight dates back to July of 2024.

Monterey Bay FC won’t have a lot of time to dwell on the shutout, as it returns home on Saturday, hosting El Paso at 7 p.m. at Cardinale Stadium, where it is 3-3-1 this season.

Despite sitting at 4-4-4, El Paso is winless in its last seven matches since a blistering 4-0-1 start, playing to a pair of draws in its last two battles on the pitch.

The Union came into the match playing with confidence, having outscored their last three USL opponents 8-2 in ending a franchise record 10-game winless streak to open the season.

Yet, for the first time since Alex Covelo took over the coaching duties for the departed Jordan Stewart seven matches ago, including games in the Prinx Tires USL Cup, Monterey Bay FC failed to put a goal through the net.

The Union actually controlled possession of the match 64.5 percent of the time, yet was outshot 8-7. It was also called for 19 fouls as opposed to FC Tulsa’s 12.

At 5-3-4, FC Tulsa sits just two points out of first place in the Western Conference. The Union sit just two back in the win column in the Western Conference among the leaders, but has suffered eight losses.

With more than half a season remaining for the Union, time is on their side to creep back into the postseason chase, sitting just four points out of a playoff spot.

Monterey Bay FC has yet to defeat a team with a winning record, or a team in the Western Conference, as the combined record of the three teams it has beaten is 3-21-12.
