LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – A Lexington nonprofit soccer club is asking for help getting its players to a national championship in Utah.
The 13-U boys gold team from NEDO Soccer has qualified for the national championship. NEDO is a nonprofit youth club that focuses on developing young men of all levels through inclusive, community-based programs.
Coaches said more than half of the boys are on scholarship, and families are now facing travel bills for flights and housing.
“We’re asking for help to get to Utah, we’re asking for help to get there and to represent Kentucky along the way,” said Duane Hathaway, volunteer coach. “We would appreciate any assistance the community can bring us.”
Hathaway said the team includes boys from different backgrounds.
“More than half of the players receive scholarships to play here,” Hathaway said. “It is a real achievement to bring together all these different kids through all these different backgrounds and do something this remarkable, win the Kentucky Premier League, advance through state cup and now head to the national championship to represent Kentucky in the U.S. soccer program.”
As of Friday morning, the team has raised about $7,500, with a goal of $20,000 to $25,000 to cover the trip. They have set up a GoFundMe under “NEDO Soccer.”
