Rangers are set to sign England international Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta.

Mailsport understands that new Ibrox gaffer Derek McInnes has targeted the defender and is hopeful of completing a deal for the 28-year-old.

Godfrey moved to the Serie A club in 2024 from Everton for £11million but has had loan spells at Ipswich Town, Sheffield United, and the Danish outfit Brondby.

Now the centre-back, who has two caps for England, could head to Ibrox ahead of the new season.

McInnes is keen to add defensive reinforcements because Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga and Derek Cornelius returned to their parent clubs this summer.

Ex-Gers skipper James Tavernier has also left the club.

The new Rangers manager has already added Ross McCrorie, who arrived from Bristol City for around £1.5 million, to the ranks.

Godfrey is now expected to be the next one through the door on a season-long deal.

He made his name as a young player at Norwich City and earned a £20million move to Everton in the Premier League.

After four years at Goodison Park, Godfrey moved to Italy and is contracted at Atalanta until 2028.

He was most recently on loan at Brondby but McInnes has moved to bring him to Ibrox for the start of the new campaign.
