Sophie Cunningham has always been one of the most biggest supporters of WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark and that is no different after Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas was just the latest to cheap shot the Indiana Fever guard.
On the most recent episode of the Show Me Something Sophie Cunningham & West Wilson podcast, Cunningham once again slammed the WNBA for failing to protect Clark, who was kneed and hit in the throat by Thomas on Wednesday.
Cunningham also revealed she did not see Thomas do what she did otherwise her and Clark’s Fever teammates would have reacted.
“I did not see that happen,” Cunningham said. “None of our team saw it happen, because I promise you if we would have seen that happen then we would’ve had her back.”
“Unfortunately, this type of s*** happens every single game to her and the league and the refs do absolutely nothing nothing about it,” she added. “(The players) are definitely targeting her and the league and the refs do nothing to protect her.”

This has been the common complaint among Clark’s supporters.
WNBA players are doing downright dirty things to Clark and the punishments are mild, at best, and that isn’t exactly going to deter other players from doing similar things.
You would think the league would want to protect its most popular player who is attracting tons of eyes to the sport and helping players make more money, yet it appears the league and its players resent Clark instead.

Another controversy surrounding Clark pertained to her not being on a 30th anniversary poster the league put out.
Of course, the belief is that Clark should have been included because of her talent and legendary popularity that no other WNBA player in league history has experienced.
However, she was not on it and instead Cunningham was, something Cunningham herself could not believe.

“Why would you ever put me on it?” Cunningham asked.
Cunningham went on to say that she of course believes Clark should be on the poster and her exclusion is just another example of how the WNBA has failed to properly market its best players and biggest stars.
“Why are we putting random players on there? I’m one of them,” Cunningham added.
Clark wasn’t the only player snubbed from the poster. Diana Taurasi and Candace Parker were two other notable names not on it.
