LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The United States Men’s National Soccer Team defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina Wednesday night, continuing a run that also includes wins against Australia and Paraguay in June.
In Lexington, residents gathered at West Sixth Brewing for a watch party, filling the venue in red, white and blue.
Catherine Hale, the brewery’s brand experience coordinator, said the brewery has hosted a watch party each time Team USA has played.
“I think it is so special to watch a sporting event especially with people you don’t know because you can watch something at home with your friends and family but to make the choice to come to be a part of something that is bigger than yourself,” Hale said.
Attendee Jairous Rossi said he watches the World Cup each tournament cycle, but added that hosting the event in the United States has raised expectations for the team.
“We never expected to do much before in previous World Cups but now there is some expectation,” Rossi said. “We are becoming a proper soccer country.”
Rossi said he would not be surprised if a Lexington player one day represents Team USA at the World Cup — a goal shared by young players in the New Circle United soccer league.
“I’m just gonna keep chasing my dream, keep practicing, keep working and I also just gonna keep chasing my dream,” one player said.
The USA will play Belgium next Monday in Seattle in the round of 16.
