Another first was added to the Vermont Green FC women’s soccer team’s inaugural season in the United Women’s Soccer League. The Green claimed their first USL W Eastern Conference Championship in club history after a 2-0 win against Eagle FC”This club is a beautiful club, and we want to be known nationally,” said Vermont Green FC Women’s soccer head coach Abby Carchio. “Every time you win, it just builds back and feeds back into the work that these folks have done to build it.”The conference finals looked eerily similar to the first half of the Eastern Conference semifinals for Vermont, with the half ending at 0-0 before Vermont eventually won that 3-0 against the Long Island Rough Riders. The scoring came earlier in this matchup, with Vermont scoring both of its two goals in the final minutes of the first half. In Vermont’s first corner kick opportunity of the game, Violet Rademacher tracked down the service from Tess Barrett, who fired a shot with her non-dominant left foot and into the back of the net for the 1-0 Vermont lead. Barrett then followed up her assist with the Green’s second goal of the game. She followed a series of shots at the net, scoring on a rebound chance to give Vermont the 2-0 lead, a lead that would not change the rest of the way. “We were kind of under the ebbs and flows in the first half,” Rademacher said. “Being able to capitalize on our set pieces and gain the momentum going into the second half was just huge. We were able to go into the half heads held high, and we were ready to defend well and win the game.”Vermont’s defense earned their second straight shutout in USL W Postseason play, backed by their captain in net, goalkeeper Olivia Shippee. “Our communication and chemistry led everyone to listen to each other and cover each other brilliantly,” Carchio said. “We faced an opponent with pace up top that we haven’t really seen, but I thought our team rose to the occasion.”Vermont will turn their attention to the USL W Semifinals, inching closer to a coveted USL W national championship, a monumental feat to accomplish in the club’s first official season in the women’s league. “It’s going to take a lot of heart, and that’s what we have,” Rademacher said. “It’s going to take a lot of heart, a lot of grinding. We know what to do, and I think we’re good enough to do it.”The Green will clash with the USL W Southern Conference champions Asheville City Soccer Club right back at Virtue Field on Saturday, July 11, at 7 p.m. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, July 7, at noon.
