The Vermont Green Football Club’s women’s soccer team is still not ready to end their inaugural season just yet. The Green blanked the two-time defending USL W Southern Conference champions Asheville City Soccer Club 1-0 in the USL W National semifinals to advance to their first USL W championship game in club history. “Inaugural season, going to the national championship … what more can you want?,” said Vermont Green FC Goalkeeper Olivia Shippee. Shippee continued her dominant reign as the Green’s starting goalkeeper, picking up her third straight shutout of the postseason with two saves in the victory against Asheville. “It’s a composure thing,” Shippee said. “I think my goalkeeping coaches do a great job preparing me. I think it’s a confidence thing. I’m confident of the team in front of me … three shutouts is a gift for us, and I give so much credit to my backline.”Shippee’s fellow Boston College teammate Emily Mara helped her offensively scoring VGFC’s only goal in the second half. She took the ball from the left side of the field outside the box and buried a shot to the top right of the net for the 1-0 lead and eventual victory for the Green. “I was going wide all game, so I decided to cut middle and take a shot and see where it goes,” Mara said. “Scoring that goal literally meant everything. I would do anything for this team … We knew this was going to be our last game on Virtue, so we were willing to do anything it took to win.”Vermont Green will have to travel away from Virtue Field for the USL W championship to play either Salmon Bay Football Club or Minnesota Aurora Football Club, trying to cap off the first ever season with a national championship victory. “It makes it a bit more emotional obviously,” said Vermont Green FC head coach Abby Carchio. “This club is special and you can see it in year one, and its only year one. We’re obviously going to go for a national championship, but this isn’t he last you’re going to hear from Vermont Green.”Kickoff for the USL W Championship game is at a date and time still yet to be determined.
