GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — St. Vincent de Paul is teeing off a new fundraiser aimed at keeping Valley families in their homes.
The nonprofit will host its first-ever golf-a-thon Sept. 24 at Bella Golf Park near 43rd Avenue and Bell Road in Glendale, with a goal of raising $100,000 for homelessness prevention efforts.
Instead of a traditional tournament, participants will be asked to raise $2,500 each by collecting pledges from sponsors — similar to a school walk-a-thon.
Golfers will play as many holes as possible during the event, with prizes going to the team that completes the most holes and the team that raises the most money. Organizers say score won’t matter.
Non-golfers can also take part, with activities planned at the driving range that are described as a Topgolf-like experience.
Ryan Corry, who is with St. Vincent de Paul’s golf-a-thon, said the need is growing as housing pressures continue across Maricopa County.
“Maricopa County had almost 90,000 evictions, so many of those were families, kids becoming homeless,” Corey said. “When we can step in ahead of time, it’s so much cheaper and less traumatic to prevent homelessness.”
Noah Montgomery, a vice president at Bell Bank, said the organization has supported St. Vincent de Paul for years and saw the golf-a-thon as a natural fit to sponsor.
“The work that Ryan Corry and his teams do in the Valley is second to none,” Montgomery said. “When they said they’re kicking off this golf-a-thon, it was a no-brainer for us to be involved.”
Bad Birdie, a golf apparel company headquartered in Scottsdale with a retail location at Kierland Commons, is also sponsoring as it approaches its 10th anniversary.
Montgomery said two sponsorship opportunities remain and encouraged interested businesses to reach out to Corry soon.
