At least one member of the Boston Red Sox will come away from the 2026 season with a ring.
Payton Tolle got married during the All-Star break. He and his wife, Devin, shared footage of their special day, which included a reception at Arya Trattoria in the North End, on Instagram earlier this week.
“We wanted it to be very, very small, very intimate,” the rookie left-hander, 23, said Friday morning. “Just us, our families, and it was exactly what we wanted it to be.”
As the nuptials approached, Tolle used work as a calming distraction. He had two starts during the team’s nine-game road trip to Anaheim, Chicago (White Sox) and New York (Mets). He pitched six shutout innings of two-hit ball against the White Sox on July 7 and 3 2/3 innings of one-run ball against the Mets in the final game before the break. Tolle finished the first half with a 3.11 ERA over 15 starts, with 87 strikeouts in 84 innings.
“Focused on (Chicago) and focused on pitching in New York, so I think it took away my nerves a little bit from the wedding,” Tolle said with a chuckle. “Devin was an absolute rockstar through the whole thing, and it was a very not-stressful wedding, with everything, and she was great through it all, so it was a good day.”
Tolle made sure to keep tabs on All-Star teammates Willson Contreras, Ceddanne Rafaela and Aroldis Chapman, though.
“We watched the Home Run Derby for sure,” Tolle said of Monday’s event, in which Contreras hit a 490-foot homer in the first round and finished one homer shy of advancing to the finals. “We were watching the All-Star Game a little bit at dinner.”
A honeymoon will have to wait until the offseason. The newlyweds will both spend Friday at Fenway.
“Fenway doubleheader, that’s right,” Tolle said with as smile. “She gets to go sit up in a seat somewhere and have a Fenway Frank and a Sam Adams.”
