EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – The Deaconess women’s classic continues, out at Wesselman Park, this week. They’ve dealt with some intense heat so far, but Wednesday’s cooler temps, made for great playing conditions!
And the headline name of the tournament was in action today — Sloane Stephens. She’s been ranked as high, as #3 in the world, and Tuesday, she was taking on Bo Young Jeong.
Stephens is up a set, and serving in the far-court. After Jung’s initial return, Stephens gets her chasing, as she puts one in the near corner, and then the next one, to the far corner, and Jeong can’t get that one back inbounds, so point Stephens.
We pick up this next point, in the middle of a long rally. Jung and Stephens trade some wicked groundstrokes. Then, Stephens puts this shot into the corner, but oh what a backhand return, by Jeong, and she wins that point!
But, Stephens shows her championship mettle. She bounces back, with a nice serve here, that Jung can’t return inbounds, and Sloane Stephens wins the match, two sets to none, over Bo Young Jeong.
“I knew that I wanted to play before the US Open swing, I wanted to play a little bit longer, even if that meant dropping down and playing a 100K,” said Stephens. “I was really comfortable with that. My goal is to play as many matches as I can. I’ve always been a fan of the pro circuit events. It’s always nice to play a new event I’ve never played before. Coming here is very different. It’s not too far from Chicago, so a great event to come to, to prepare for the US Open swing. When you’ve been injured, but also been at the top of the game, there’s a middle place you’re trying to get back to, if not to the top of the game. This only brings a step close, more matches, more confidence, so just happy to be getting wins and going through.”
The Deaconess women’s tennis classic runs through this Sunday, out at Wesselman Park.
