CHICAGO, Ill. (WIFR) – Cue Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis: Patrick Kane is a Chicago Blackhawk for the second time in his career.
The team signed him to a two-year eight-million-dollar deal Thursday.
Chicago drafted Kane first overall in the 2007 NHL Draft. He scored 21 goals in all 82 games his rookie season and earned the Calder Memorial trophy as the league’s top rookie.
Kane was a vital piece of the Blackhawks dynasty which won three Stanley Cups in six seasons (2010, 2013, 2015). In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal in overtime against the Philadelphia Flyers to give the Blackhawks their first Stanley Cup since 1961. He later won the Conn Smythe in 2013 as the playoff MVP.
He won the Hart (MVP), Ted Lindsay (Most Outstanding Player), and Art Ross (Scoring Champion) awards following the 2015-16 season.
Kane skated with the Hawks his first 16 years in the NHL until he was traded to the New York Rangers in February 2023. He played 19 games for them before heading to the Detroit Red Wings.
During Kane’s first tenure with the team the Blackhawks reached the playoffs every season from 2009-10 through 2017-18. Chicago’s reached the playoffs once since Kane’s departure. They beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 in the COVID bubble before they lost to the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1.
Chicago’s 2007 first overall pick will now get a chance to play with Connor Bedard; the franchise’s 2023 first overall pick.
