SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Jordan Devey, a Utah native and former NFL offensive lineman who won Super Bowl XLIX with the New England Patriots, has died. He was 38.
Devey’s parents said their son died by suicide on July 23. They believe his death may have been related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.
Devey spent eight seasons in the NFL after signing with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He also played for the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, the Oakland Raiders, the Las Vegas Raiders and the Buffalo Bills.
A product of American Fork High School, Devey overcame Osgood-Schlatter disease, which kept him from playing football as a teenager. He played the tuba in the marching band and baseball before serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Costa Rica.
He later starred at Snow College and the University of Memphis, where he earned second-team All-Conference USA honors in 2012.
After retiring from the NFL, Devey volunteered as a youth football coach, mentored athletes and remained active in his church. He is survived by his wife, Linsey, and their four children. A fundraiser has been established to assist the family.
