I recently traveled to Cape Cod for the first time. I stepped off the plane with three goals in mind — I wanted fresh seafood, I wanted to immerse myself in the charms of a small town, and I wanted to walk on the beach. I was able to accomplish all of this and more at the historic Ocean Edge Resort &Golf Club in Brewster, Massachusetts.

Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club is divided into two main areas: the historic Mansion side and modern villa-style accommodations on the golf course on The Villages side. I stayed in the Mansion area.

The Mansion at Ocean Edge is a member of the Historic Hotels of America and the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. It was once a stately home overlooking Cape Cod Bay. Built in 1907 after the original mansion burnt down, it has served through the years as a private residence, a summer home, and a monastery. Today, it is the heart of the resort with all of the grand spaces and mysterious nooks you would expect from a building with this kind of pedigree. It also has killer views.

I was hungry and tired from the flight when I checked in, so I immediately made my way to Bayzo’s Pub, located on the lower floor of the mansion. The vibe was cozy, with dark wood. leather, and brass evoking a classic English Pub. A live musician strummed a guitar in the corner, and I lingered over a glass of wine to hear him sing. The food was excellent, featuring elevated takes on classic pub fare crafted with New England ingredients like seafood and wild mushrooms.

I ordered the tender, flavorful steak frites with truffle salt fries and a blue cheese demi. On my final night, I returned from the lobster roll. It was everything I’d hoped for, with piles of sweet, firm lobster on the thinnest bed of lettuce cradled on a buttered roll molded into a taco-like shape for easy eating.

During my stay, I enjoyed daily brunch at the RosCommon Room inside the Mansion, where I started my day with delicious dishes like lobster quiche, sourdough avocado toast, and buttermilk pancakes with whipped butter and Vermont maple syrup.

I took advantage of the resort’s waterfront location with lunch of fried clams and fries at the Beach Bar overlooking the bay (washed down with a boozy frozen cocktail, of course). The next day, I popped over to Lynx Tavern for fish and chips with beer-battered local cod on a sunny patio overlooking the golf course on The Villages side of the resort.

The highlight of my culinary experience was dinner at Ocean Terrace, an outdoor dining space with sweeping views of the water. Earlier in the day, I toured the oyster farm located just offshore from the resort. Now I was feasting on oysters sourced from that very farm, along with succulent lobster, New England Clam Chowder, and an entree of jumbo prawns with truffle grits.

Accommodations at The Mansion

Accommodations at The Mansion include private homes and townhouses (some with waterfront views) or traditional hotel-style rooms and suites located in detached “wings” flanking the main building. 

I lodged in a spacious 580-square-foot Premier Two-Queen Guestroom with a private open-air balcony for sipping coffee in the morning. The room combined modern amenities such as a flat-screen television, a mini-fridge, and an in-room Keurig with nostalgic nods to the property’s historic nature, like a seated vanity in the generously sized bathroom.

The Mansion’s crown jewel is a private 700-foot-long beach, complete with a waterfront bar and attendants to set up chairs. This side of the resort also offers indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, kayak rentals, paddleboard rentals, and seasonal activities on the grand front lawn.

I had a blast taking a pickleball lesson at the courts on The Villages’ side, where amenities also include tennis courts, a swimming pool, fitness classes, watercraft rentals on Blueberry Pond, and the only Nicklaus-Design gold course on Cape Cod.

I rented a bike at the resort and enjoyed an afternoon pedaling around Brewster, a postcard-perfect New England community with a bookstore, an old-fashioned general store, boutiques, pubs, and historic homes lining the sidewalks.

The resort is located 2 miles from the 1,900-acre Nikerson State Park, which features miles of bike and hiking trails and ponds stocked with trout.
