BELOIT — Griffin Oberneder is once again the Beloit City Men’s Golf Tournament champion.
Oberneder captured his third City title with a two-hole playoff victory over another multi-time champ, Nick Hagen, at the Beloit Club Sunday afternoon.
Oberneder and Hagen went into the playoff tied with a three-round total of 225, two strokes better than third-place finisher Alex Cortez.
On the deciding playoff hole, a par five, Oberneder cracked his drive down the middle and hit his second shot on the green, about 20 feet from the hole for eagle.
Hagen’s drive went into the fairway bunker on the right said. His second shot ended up within five yards of the green but in heavy rough. Hagen made a nice chip to about five feet out.
Oberneder two-putted for birdie while Hagen missed his birdie putt, finishing the tournament.
Oberneder, who won in 2023 and 2024, just wrapped up his golf career at UW-Eau Claire. He said after shooting a 79 in the first round, he wasn’t sure he could make his way to a Sunday finale.
“Shooting a 79 wasn’t what I was looking for obviously,” Oberneder said. “I knew it was a long tournament, but I also knew it had to get better from there. Round two was a big momentum for me. I went in thinking that if I shot 70 I could’ve been in the final group. As it turned out, that was true. But I shot a 74 instead, and was in the second-to-last group. I was four shots back, but there were about six to eight guys within five strokes, so I knew I had a chance.”
When competing in college tournaments, everything is updated digitally and Oberneder always knew where he stood. Not the case at the City.
“Sometimes you’ll just hear the buzz of ‘well, so-and-so isn’t playing so hot,’” Oberneder said. “And that’s about all you get. But today I didn’t really get any of that. I was feeling pretty good until I double-bogeyed 16. After that, I didn’t think I had much of a shot, but I was able to birdie 17 and then par on 18 to finish the round. After that, I just went to the putting green to stay warm in case there was a playoff.”
Oberneder said it was a thrill match up against Hagen.
“I had never played with Nick before, so that was nice to finally do on the playoff holes,” Oberneder said. “He’s a great player and a great guy. Both playoff holes were really tense. I know my nerves were really going. He doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, so I tried to make something happen, and I got a couple of good breaks to win it.”
Oberneder had nothing but praise for the City tourney.
“It’s my favorite tournament that I play,” Oberneder said. “It’s always so much fun, you see the same faces and you wish everyone well. A lot of guys really bring their ‘A’ game. It’s like the Masters for the City of Beloit, you just want to go out there and compete and play well. It’s a very fun feeling to win it. I can’t say enough good things about it.”
Liam Flanagan won the ‘A’ Flight with a 234, one stroke better than Mark Caples. Placing third was Jason May with a 236.
Josh Dailey took home the title in the ‘B’ Flight easily with a 247. Brody Berg and Logan Holmes tied for second with a 255.
Cole Champion took home the ‘C’ flight gross title with a 268. Russel Hansberry and Demetrius Jones tied for second with a 276.
Steve Sennett won the Senior flight gross title with a 223. Chris Harris was second with a 233, while Dave DeGeorge placed third with a 238.
