LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Before the Cowboys’ take the field this season, they made time for something bigger than football.
McNeese State held its fifth annual “Victory Day” at Navarre Stadium on Tuesday, giving children in the community with physical and cognitive special needs the chance to experience playing in a college football stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Gavin Stout said the event means as much to the players as it does to the participants.
“I think it’s so important, not only for them but for us. It helps us to understand we were blessed with this opportunity we have and makes us not take anything for granted. I just love getting to see these kids get to do what we get to do on an everyday basis,” Stout said.
One of the stars of the day was , who was attending “Victory Day” for the second time. When the ball was placed in his hands, Nolen didn’t hesitate — he took it all the way to the end zone.
When asked what it felt like to score, Nolen kept it simple.
“Fast!” Nolen said.
Stout said watching Nolen find the end zone was a special moment for him.
“That fired me up, seeing him run into the end zone and get hyped with the guys. That was great to see,” Stout said.
From the sidelines, Nolen’s mother, Sarah Nolan, was equally moved by the experience.
“It’s just great. It’s great that they’re included and excited. It’s just something to look forward to,” Sarah Nolen said.
Corbin plans to attend McNeese games this season — and he’s already set his expectations high for the Cowboys.
“I want them to win. I hope they put some points on the board,” Nolen said.
Stout heard Corbin’s hopes for the team and said they’re ready to deliver.
“We’re gonna get that done for him. We’re gonna get that done for Corbin,” Stout said.
