Former NFL wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is expected to join the Georgia Tech coaching staff and work with wide receivers, a source briefed on the situation told The Athletic on the condition of anonymity because the hire has not yet been made public.
It’ll be Hopkins’ first real coaching job, after the free-agent receiver recently spent a week helping out the New England Patriots coaching staff.
There is a connection here. First-year Georgia Tech offensive coordinator George Godsey was Hopkins’ coordinator with the Houston Texans from 2015 to 2016. He was also the Baltimore Ravens tight ends coach last year, with Hopkins on the team.
“It was a great experience for all of us,” Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said of Hopkins earlier this week. “That’s what we try to do when we have some of these unique situations where a player or former player or whatever it might be wants to come in and help and learn and they love football, and I think it was good for everybody.”
Hopkins has yet to issue a formal retirement statement, but his move to Georgia Tech would seem to indicate that his NFL playing days are over. He played in the NFL for 13 seasons, earning three All-Pro honors with the Texans. He was also an All-American at Clemson in 2012.
