The much-discussed pairing between Stefon Diggs and the Washington Commanders is happening.
Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Commanders will sign Diggs after the two sides expressed a mutual interest in each other during recent contract talks.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the one-year deal is worth up to $12 million.
The Commanders had been most frequently connected to Brandon Aiyuk as they sought to fill their void at wide receiver, but a few obstacles got in the way of that happening.
For starters, Aiyuk continues to wait for his release from the San Francisco 49ers. They are under no pressure to cut ties with him since he is on the reserve/left squad list, so he’s not being paid and doesn’t count against their 90-man roster in training camp.
Another obstacle that may have hindered a potential deal between Aiyuk and the Commanders occurred last month when the veteran wide receiver called out Jayden Daniels on social media.
Aiyuk and Daniels played together in 2019 when they were college teammates at Arizona State.
Instead, the Commanders pivoted to bring in Diggs to boost their receiver depth chart. He joins a group that includes Terry McLaurin, Luke McCaffrey, Van Jefferson, Dyami Brown and rookie Antonio Williams.
This also ends a long wait for Diggs to find a new home after being released by the New England Patriots in March. The 32-year-old racked up 1,013 yards and four touchdowns in 17 starts during his lone season in New England.
Diggs’ receiving yards from 2025 would have led the Commanders. His four touchdowns would have been tied with Zach Ertz for second on the team.
The Commanders are just over one week away from kicking off their preseason schedule when they host the Miami Dolphins on Aug. 14. They will open the regular season on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 13.
