Putting veterans first, golf tournament in Hollis raises funds for veteran home improvements
HOLLIS, N.H. —
Building Dreams for Marines hosted its 14th annual golf tournament at Overlook Golf Club in Hollis to help raise funds for improving accessibility in the homes of New Hampshire veterans.
The organization uses 98% of its proceeds towards helping veterans feel more comfortable in their homes.
“Whether it be a handicap ramp, a handicapped bathroom, we’ve remodeled kitchens,” Building Dreams for Marines President Tim Stanton said. “Anything that has to do with mobility, that makes their lives better.”
Stanton served in the Marine Corps from 1985 to 1989. He said he has family members who are veterans, and helping those in need is everything to him.
“As a veteran myself, this is something that’s core to my heart,” Stanton said. “Sixty percent of the veterans are of the Vietnam era age. Those are the folks who are in need of the most help and it’s exciting to be able to help them.”
Golfers participated in an 18-hole scramble tournament with several raffles and prizes to help raise money for the organization.
“It’s a wonderful, wonderful cause, I’m loving it, we do this every year and it’s always enjoyable,” Steve Rizzuto of Belmont, Massachusetts said.
“I mean, it’s a cause that, we would absolutely do anything for,” Doug Avola of Windham said. “It’s a complete privilege to play for Marine veterans. They do so much for us.”
Building Dreams for Marines has completed 92 projects so far and has three in progress.
