HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) – Severe weather forced the postponement of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Richmond Raceway on Friday night.
The race is now scheduled to begin Saturday at noon.
Earlier in the evening, fans filled the raceway ahead of what was expected to be a full weekend of racing.
Before the delays, fans lined up for autographs from drivers, including Dystany Spurlock. She is a Highland Springs High School graduate and the first Black woman to be a NASCAR driver.
NASCAR driver Spencer Boyd was also at the track ahead of his run in the Truck Series.
“Such a cool race track, it’s my favorite,” Boyd said. “My great friends over at A Child’s Wish backed by Amthor International have been a long-time partner of mine. And we actually have Ashlyn here at the racetrack.”
Ashlyn’s wish was to attend a NASCAR race. She was joined at the track by her mother, father, and siblings.
“It’s just amazing to have all five of us together. Family time is awesome, so we’re happy that we’re here,” Ashlyn’s mother said.
For many in attendance, Richmond Raceway is a regular stop on the NASCAR calendar.
“I’ve been coming out here since I was a kid. 2008 was our first race and we’ve been here ever since,” one fan said.
Fan Jackson McNulty described the atmosphere at the track.
“Everyone is yelling. I mean, you can’t hear anything because of the cars, but it’s awesome,” McNulty said. “It’s just great racing — just always had great racing.”
Fans also cited the extra activities as a draw, including a post-race visit to Victory Lane.
The Cook Out 400 Cup Series race is scheduled for Saturday night at Richmond Raceway.
