Esteban Cardoso was recently awarded the 2026 Christopher Anderson Memorial scholarship for his hard work as a student athlete and team player.
The $1,800 scholarship is awarded each year by Anderson’s family to a graduating senior DeKalb High School soccer player who is a good student and exemplifies the spirit, teamwork, sportsmanship and enthusiasm for soccer that Christopher demonstrated, according to a news release.
Cardoso played soccer at DeKalb High School all four years and received an All-Conference Award, according to the release.
“Esteban is the definition of perseverance and quiet leadership. Throughout the season, he consistently overcame obstacles and injuries while continuing to put the team first,” DHS boys soccer coach PJ Hamilton said in the release. “Respected by both his teammates and coaches, Esteban leads by example through his work ethic, composure, and selflessness.”
Hamilton said Cardoso is known for remaining “calm, cool, and collected” in every situation, and brings confidence to those around him.
“Off the field, Esteban excels in balancing academics, athletics, work, and his social life with maturity well beyond his years,” Hamilton said in the release. “He is the type of young man who embraces every challenge placed in front of him and continues to grow through adversity. We are excited to see all that Esteban accomplishes in the next phase of his life and look forward to following his college journey and future success.”
Cardoso plans to attend Kishwaukee College and study construction trades, according to the release.
The scholarship was created in 2000 by the Anderson family in memory of their son who was killed in a car crash in July 18, 1999, at the age of 16.
The scholarship fund has grown each year through contributions made by his family and people in the DeKalb community and is managed by the DeKalb County Community Foundation.
